Life is uncertain...eat dessert first!
Since 1930, my family has been baking quality products for dessert lovers like you.
Our story begins with my grandfather, John Slove, being hired to work as an apprentice in a Chicago bakery. While there he learned everything there is to know about baking. Then, in 1946, he and my grandmother, Grace, opened their own store on Diversey Avenue in Chicago – Slove Bakery.
My grandparents’ goals were to produce great quality dessert products and to provide excellent customer service: grandpa did the baking; grandma the hand shaking. Through hard work and determination they grew the business and the bakery’s reputation as one of the finest in the Chicagoland area.
Eight years later grandma discovered she also had a bun in the oven – my father, Ken. In recognition of his birth, they changed the name of the store to Slove and Son Bakery. It turned out to be prophetic. In time my father, too, would become a master baker.
Flash forward about 19 years. My father married Betty, his high school sweetheart, and took over the family business after my grandparents passed. The store had moved to Lindenhurst and was now named Slove’s Country Charm. Dad baked gourmet cakes and every treat under the sun, while mom mastered the fine art of customer service.
Then, in 1989, my parents moved the store to our current location in Round Lake Beach and coined the term Cakery which, to keep things short and sweet – like a mini chocolate éclair (Sorry, I love chocolate!), explains how Lovin Oven Cakery was born.
That’s our story. Thank you for supporting our dream and enabling us to continue the tradition started by my grandfather more than 75 years ago; in doing so, you have ensured that our family recipes will delight dessert lovers for generations to come.
With sweet affection and an affection for sweets,
Matt Slove
