Leonard Harrison State Park

Story

Leonard Harrison State Park is a 585acre Pennsylvania state park in Tioga County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. It is on the east rim of the Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, which is deep and nearly across here. It also serves as headquarters for the adjoining Colton Point State Park, its sister park on the west rim of the gorge. Leonard Harrison State Park is known for its views of the Pine Creek Gorge, and offers hiking, fishing and hunting, whitewater boating, and camping. The park is in Shippen and Delmar Townships, west of Wellsboro at the western terminus of Pennsylvania Route 660.Pine Creek flows through the park and has carved the gorge through five major rock formations from the Devonian and Carboniferous periods. Native Americans once used the Pine Creek Path along the creek. The path was later used by lumbermen, and then became the course of a railroad from 1883 to 1988. Since 1996, the 63.4mi Pine Creek Rail Trail has followed the creek through the park. The Pine Creek Gorge was named a National Natural Landmark in 1968 and is also protected as a Pennsylvania State Natural Area and Important Bird Area, while Pine Creek is a Pennsylvania Scenic and Wild River. The gorge is home to many species of plants and animals, some of which have been reintroduced to the area.

Spectacular views of the canyon. There is a one mile walking trail to the bottom on the Turkey path. We did not walk this yet. There is a visitors center which tells about the history of the place. An audio and video plays constantly. Very cool. Also a small gift shop with refrigerator magnets, hats, sweatshirts, and shirts. When we were there, there was a small vendor with ice cream and drinks. There was local honey for sale also. Worth the trip from wherever you are from. Very cool! Download an offline map, service is non existent here.

Set up beautifully. We weren't able to hike because my boyfriend has bad knees. The paved walkway with railing made viewing the canyon from different angles possible. We actually went there 2 days. The first day was in the afternoon when the sun was bright & had begun to set. The second day we went earlier. I recommend going before 2P on a sunny day. I'd love to go back in the fall.

The view was very nice in a beautiful fall day. We did the trail along the lookout points, not the Turkey trail down to the valley. A decent place to spend couple hours in the great canyon of PA, can't compare this to the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Absolutely beautiful, breathtaking Scenic views. It's great for a quick stop just to take into Scenic views in every direction for miles. There's also a nice easy and even handicap accessible 1 mile loop trail with very nice views. Then there's always the turkey path which is a little bit of a harder hike. It's about 1.25 miles down and then you turn around and go 1.25 miles right back uphill , that's the part that gets you, that uphill hike is a workout. But the views and the waterfalls are amazing and well worth the hike.

Beautiful place to visit, ample parking and very well kept public restrooms. Very nice visitor center with videos on the canyon and the surrounding areas.
