This is a desert landscape, and as such, the park tends to have native plants that can withstand the dry, harsh environment of this Owyhee River Canyon landscape. With the years of drought, it's taken its toll on what the park used to be. The landscape has changed, and what was once a shoreline of 8 - 10 feet are now hundreds. The sadness in this is it will take years of great snow pack for it to be able to return to what it once was. For now, nature is reclaiming what was once hers. The beauty is just different and still majestic if you like solitude and quiet. As always, leave it better than you found it, and enjoy .
Drove over from Caldwell which was about a 1.5 hr drive. The drive through the canyon was beautiful with the landscape in continual transition from harsh high-plain desert to lush riverside parking. The road leads to some breathtaking views!
This is a great place to catch crappie as long as the water is warm enough. Early in the season it looks pretty bleak but with the proper amount of rain in the watershed to the south it fills up. My wife and I have been fishing here for decades.
Driving from Ontario taking 201. Beautiful drive-through quiet peaceful. Highly recommend! Anyone who sees the signs should go out there.
We have been here for a week every May to fish. I have viewed this park go into decline with each year. I have told Travis the past supervisor. Every year how I felt. Well, he has done a good job of killing many trees by not watering. Indian creek is especially run down with many sites shaded by a dead tree. Travis told me it was because of Kate Browns policy of cutting back watering. He has to be wrong about that because I have seen beautiful, green State parks. I hope they start watering so the horrible goat head thorns do not replace the grass. I got sick of those last year.
52+ miles of deep canyon gorges, fishing, wild horses, and wide open spaces. Pit restrooms super clean, so kudos to the maintenance crews, who are often under appreciated heroes.
Some pals and I were meandering through the park, got cocky, and ended up popping our 2006 Ford Freestyles tire it was tragic and we were stuck! but park ranger Brady came out to help us. Not only did he take his lunch break to change our tire, but he guided us out of the road and made sure we made it safely out of the park. he went out of his way to help us, was thoughtful, genuine, and insightful. without his help we would have been very unprepared. fundamentally the best, most genuine encounter i’ve ever had in any park. thanks brady. we owe you a beer.
The facilities here are great. This is a great fishery with beautiful scenery. The road to get here is narrow and care must be taken. Camping here is castle free and the campgrounds are well taken care of. We did not see any signs prohibiting fire yet a ranger approached us and had us extinguish the fire. Would have been better to post or make more readily visible the no fire sign.
We took an autumn drive on Owyhee Lake Road through the State Park. Awesome drive with terrific scenery. We walked a few short hikes to enjoy the fall colors and the views around the lake. Looking forward to coming back in the spring.
Gorgeous drive! So peaceful and quiet.
