Story

Kitty Coleman Provincial Park, also known as Kitty Coleman Beach Provincial Park, is a provincial park in British Columbia, Canada. It is located on Vancouver Island, in the Courtney/Comox area, south of the mouth of the Oyster River just northeast of Courtenay. Unlike most provincial parks, it is a Class 'C' provincial park, meaning it is run by a local community board., and is usually filled with local campers. The beach is directly across from the sites and provides a beautiful view of Powell River and the surrounding beaches across the water. There are only pit toilets available, and no hook-up or sani-station for motorhomes. It is approximately 0.1 km2 in area.HistoryThe park was established on November 14, 1944 and was named after Kitty Coleman, a local First Nation member who left her tribe early to marry a white man.Flora and faunaThere are very tall Douglas Fir trees in the southern area. Wild onions also grow in the park.

"DO NOT TAKE ALDERGROVE RD TO ACCESS SITE. We are a first come first serve only. Most sites are on the ocean. Office opens at 8:30 am and caretakers know what sites are coming up so call or line up at this time. Can hold sites over the phone for the same day of arrival. Not on the Government Website. There are no services. Rocky beach. Can house any size unit. There is potable water and pit toilets. No WIFI. Ten day limit. Pets on leash at all times. Camping is $20.00. Boat ramp is $10.00 daily or $50.00 annually. The boat ramp is difficult depending on tides. Boats larger than 18 feet can be difficult to launch. There is also a high tide ramp in the park. Better ramp, just narrow. Open Apr 16-Sept 30."

Great management and beautiful sites. This was the one place we didn't have any rain while camping! Beautiful beachfront sites. We even got to listen to some sea lions down the way. There is also a Creek that flows through. I really enjoyed seeing the gigantic Douglas fir tree.
We showed up late after arriving with the last ferry from Powell River. It was marked "Full" but fortunately the gentleman at the gate discovered there was a "no-show" and got us a marvelous spot for our campervan. The outhouse is the nicest and cleanest I have ever seen anywhere. It doesn't even smell bad in there. Be aware there are no showers or bathrooms. Nice day-picnic area. Many beachfront campsites, and the ones that aren't still have great views of the ocean. Small, friendly and inexpensive campground. Expect it to be full if no reservation during summer.
This is one of the finest campgrounds in all of south or central Vancouver Island. Beach front views, $15 a night, well taken care of. It puts everything else in the region to shame. Why 3 stars then? Because it is sardine packed like a private campground. There is maybe 10 feet of space between the side of your rig and the next rig. Anything less than 30 feet is unacceptable. 50 feet is preferable. I can't rate any sardines farm more than 3 stars. Also, there's no sun. Even the sunniest spots have a couple hours at best to give, so don't expect to get any power. Generator hours inexplicably run over lunch and end at 2pm, so there is no opportunity to boost over dinner. If you run out, you're done till tomorrow. The sites are also not entirely level. It's not super bad, but results may vary. With sardines there is never any such thing as peace and quiet. That said, I notice there are lots of older people here and that helps immensely. I've come in september specifically to avoid families so I can't speak for disaster season. Just that, for a campsite that commits the cardinal sin of packing sardines, it is fairly quiet. The sound of the waves and view really helps to boost this. This is an incredibly difficult region to find good camping. If you are stuck here and cannot just drive to the North Island or go to better parts of BC to camp, this is a solid option to soak in for a few.
calm and quiet, lots of birds to watch, several boaters using the launch area.
Pleasant walk but nothing spectacular. Went while the water was low in the fall. Beach is rocky but good for launching for water sports. Walking trails in the trees were quiant and maintained.
20 minutes from downtown and a stunning example of west coast Canada. Volunteers have made this an excellent salmon sanctuary. Tons of eagles and if you are lucky you might spot a sea lion or an orca.
The price is right especially for being next to the ocean. The caretaker is very nice and keeps the campground very clean and has firewood if you need it. Unfortunately the campsites and the fire pits are really close to each other so it can be loud especially if your neighbours like to talk a lot and have dogs that bark at every moment.
Beautiful coastal rainforest and a great tour at Kitty Coleman Woodland Gardens. Woodland Gardens now features an outdoor musical stage featuring musicians that perform bi-weekly at this super natural place. We were delighted to experience a musical performance by Hawaiian artists Anella and Luke Bluguthrie which was totally awesome! There will be repeat performances this season, so check back for dates. The gardens are stunning with the last rainfall and the wildlife viewing is even better. We revisited in June 20th. 2021
Really nice park ! Fire pits across the road beside the beach . Deer , eagles and other birds , otters . Boat launch and fish cleaning station .
Great shady camp sites, lovely beach and ocean views, cool boat launches and respectful fellow campers. Really great spot at $20 a night, and no services is a nice return to nature for the basic camper.
