One day I go to this community center, just to use the gym and relax a bit. When I walk in, the staff look at me strange, like I don’t belong there. I say hello, but they don’t smile back. I try to ask one question, and the lady talk to me with rude tone, like I’m bothering her. I look around, the place old, smell bad, and floor not clean.nLater I sit down and talk with two other people, both visible minorities like me. They tell me same thing, they feel not welcome, staff treat them different too. It make me so sad and angry, because a community center should be for everyone, not just for some people.nI leave after short time, didn’t feel comfortable to stay. This place need big change, better cleaning, more respect, and better training for staff. Until then, I don’t want to come back!
This facility, Jewish Community Centre, does not practice Humanity. Or else in my case, they did not. Not only did they not practice Humanity but I was totally ignored with no compassion or response whatsoever. Plainly, ignored.nIn April of this year ,2025, I came from Edmonton, where I live, to spend the last days with my Uncle in the Jewish Hospital Home across the street. I had been staying by his bedside making sure he was as comfortable as possible with the great help of the staff there. After 5 days, I needed a break and went for a walk noticing the Jewish Community Centre, expecting the same friendliness I got from the Jewish Home. I went inside to inquire and let them know about my circumstance. They told me I had to pay for a one month pass of about $130 to use the facility. So I thought even if I were there for another week maybe it would be worth it and that a workout and proper shower would feel so good at that moment. So I paid. The day after the next, my Uncle passed and I was not able to use the facility not even one more time. The morning he passed as we waited for the coroner to pick up my Uncle, I took my elderly aunt to have some soup there and told them about my Uncle, that maybe they would help me with a partial refund for using the facility only once. I was given an email to write to where I told them about what had happened along with a photo of me and my Uncle, my receipt and gym pass. The response was that they received my email and would respond shortly. I never got one. I sent 2 more emails in case they forgot about me and still to this day, no response. I’ve been told not to bother writing this review for it will change nothing. But I decided to speak up for others who have not so that more people will know how I was treated. To be honest, if the lady just responded as she said she would, even just to let me know my request had been denied and show compassion for my loss, I would have been ok. But to be ignored and not shown a practice in Humanity that this world is already lacking, my conscience would not let this go. To the guard who works at the door, I’m sorry you work for these type of people.nnUpdate: Oct 2025 I was phoned back saying sorry and they are sending a refund, which I have not received yet and have been asked multiple times to take down this review. Once I receive what they have promised, I will delete this review.
I've been a member at the J since 2023. My daughter attends the daycare which has been an incredible experience. The teachers are so caring and she has made lifelong friends. We also participate in many of the programs : kids swim, ballet, martial arts, gymnastics. And the adult barre fusion! We love them all. Shout out to all the staff who make our daughters and us feel like the J is a second home.nnWould highly highly recommend becoming a member!
This community center not good place. When I go there, I feel like they look down on minorities, like we not belong there.nThe staff not friendly, they act rude and don’t show respect. The building is old and dirty — really not clean. Go here if you want to get sick. I talk with few other people inside, they also minorities, and they feel same way. Very bad experience, I will not come back.
Welcoming and wonderful amenities. The gym is fantastic and the centre is a fantastic community hub. Grateful to be apart of it.
