Funkenhausen
"Funkenhausen is a modern beer hall that serves a soulful mash-up of Southern and Bavarian flavors in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood. Chef Mark Steuer draws on his German heritage and Charleston, South Carolina upbringing to create a menu that reimagines his fondest meals and memories from childhood. The on-tap selection of German beers offers a full expression of styles, while the wine program focuses on food-friendly, under-the-radar gems from the world’s German-speaking regions. Partner Daniel Boyd redesigned the 1920s warehouse and former gym into an expansive dining room and bar, accented by just the right amount of cuckoo clocks and kitsch."

The services were fantastic! The staffs there were kind and attentive! The portion per dish was light, so you may want to order more dishes. Not a single complaint about the restaurant. A restaurant I would probably revisit!
This place has a great soundtrack. I love the mix of their fun atmosphere with decadent menu items. We started with the broccolini and oysters, then moved to a full slab of ribs with white bbq sauce, and ended with desserts. Whenever I ordered a beer, the server asked if I "just wanted the 16oz", because that's their smallest serving. In proper German tradition, they also had a stein or a boot of beer available. Service was friendly and attentive, with other staff glad to jump in to grab anything we needed, and our desserts brought out by someone from the kitchen even.
The spot is such a wonderful place to be. It's very comfortable and lovely and the staff is absolutely amazing. Excellent service. The only thing that didn't quite meet expectations was the food. The price is a bit higher but I was thinking that the food would then be a bit yummier. We had the crab dip, the pretzel, and the pork schnitzel. The drinks were very good though.
I’ve had this spot bookmarked for a while and finally made it for dinner. My only regret is not going sooner! Tried the oysters, beef croquettes, schnitzel, and cacio e Pepe and all were excellent. Also liked the decor/ design aesthetic very cozy and modern! Will def be back for brunch sometime.
Great German food with a slightly American twist. I ordered family style and had plenty of food, all of it delicious. Our waiter was amazing and the food was served promptly. My only complaint was that the music was a little loud.
Overpriced for a mediocre meal. An $85 steak shouldn't be over cooked or undersized. Artificial bacon bits should be saved for cafeteria salads not $20 oysters. When I mentioned dissatisfied the manager offered a round of shots. This is a bar, not the upscale dinning experience you're paying for.
Overall cool vibes - great atmosphere and great music in the evening. Great service- Mari was awesome handling our reservation and greeting us. I felt very welcome and it was quite the hospitable place. Service was quick even during busy Saturday night during Restaurant Week. The food was incredible! I look forward to coming back and trying more menu items. Recommend: German pretzel, Slated Caramel dessert, Crab toast, Raclette, Knachwurst, Spaetzle caccio e pepe, and of course das Boots of bier. Enjoyed the Sunni Kolsh and the Shnitzengiggles hehe Definitely check this place out!!!
German and soul food is a rare combination but when done right it creates a unique experience. A michelin bib-gourmand and a recommendation from a co-worker, Funkenhausen was a pretty easy choice for our office group get together party. Our large group of 10 was looked after really well and the management was very accommodating of our last minute requests with reservation time and party size changes. We sat right by the open kitchen watching the experts exhibit their culinary skills. Food was delectable and we loved the stories of the recipes and the details of the preparation enunciated gracefully by our server. Beer selection lived up to the expectation and overall we had a really good time.
Very good experience but $$$. Small portions vs price is nice occasionally but not worth it for me on the norm.
One of my favorite restaurants in the city. Great, changing menu with a great line of of brews. The schnitzel is superb. Pounded thin with great breading. Pretzel comes with two fantastic dipping sauces. Service is always fantastic. Love Funkenhausen!
