Edmonton International Airport

Worked at this airport for a few years, and travel through here a lot. Its a small airport with a big personality, which is both good and bad. I have to admit that a lot of the routes I do take end up going through Calgary which is a pain. Wish they had more direct routes.

Years and years ago Edmonton closed its Municipal Airport based on promises that having one airport would bring the city "lots and lots" of direct international flights. Well, has anyone tried to fly direct lately to Japan? China? Germany? France? Italy? Australia? No direct flights to any of those... you have to connect through some other city to get there. Recently, I had to be crammed into a twin-engine propeller plane to fly to Calgary to get my direct flight to Japan. I had to walk to and from this little "puddle jumper" outside the terminal on the ramp in the weather. When all the lies were being told to people about closing down one of twork airports in Edmonton, I told anyone who would listen that it takes passenger numbers to justify direct flights and Edmonton was being better served with jet service to connecting flights from the Municipal at that time. Closing an airport wouldn't mean big international jets would start dropping from the sky to our single international airport 45 minutes south by car, cab or bus. Edmonton lost big time to those shysters back then and we're still paying for it years later.

Very well layed out and easier to navigate. The quality of the lounges, passenger gates, amenities, and other services is superior to many other large airports. The customer service/staff in general is also very friendly. The design of the airport also allows for some great views of aircraft arriving/departing!

Not a family friendly airport. One change table in our entire area of the airport and it is in a single and dirty bathroom that had a line. Change tables are cheap... Why on earth not have them in every bathroom. Also no water fountains to be found so you'll be forced to buy plastic. Not to mention that there doesn't seem to be a nursing room. Travelling with an infant is stressful enough even with these basics.

Layed out well and easy to get around. Lots of great shops and restaurants. I have read through some of the reviews and there are a lot of people who believe that they were randomly selected for pat downs by security based on race, they were angry that their child or if they were carrying small child was selected. Let me explain as i have worked for airport security. The security officer does not randomly select you!!! It is completely picked at random by a machine as you walk through. If you are selected there is a special silent notification given to officer. I won't explain the whole process for security reasons but believe me you are not selected because of how you look.When we are standing at the other side of that walk through and we see you coming with a small baby we are hoping as much as you that you are not selected. I used to hate the comments and looks i would get because people thought i picked them based on their race.
