Story

From the time of the earliest native tribes, courier de bois and voyageurs to today’s tourist and sportsmen, people have been meeting here to socialize, fish and trade. For thousands of years, Michilimackinac has been known as the meeting spot. Our family moved to this spot in 1943 when Glen and Beatrice Darrow bought the large stone house that stood here to raise their family of nine children. In the summer of 1957, Beatrice (Grandma Bea), son Patrick and daughter Glenda opened a hot dog stand in the garage that was attached to the house. With the opening of the Bridge and the large increase in traffic, they quickly outgrew the hot dog stand. The old house was torn down and replaced with a drive-in restaurant, complete with car hops, root beer mugs and hot rods.

Around 1967, Grandma Bea sold the drive-in to son Don and daughter-in-law Theresa. They added some additional inside seating and a few items to the menu. Don continued a successful career as a Ford, Lincoln & Mercury salesman, helping Theresa at night. Theresa ran the drive-in successfully for the next 20 years. In 1988, their son Randy and daughter-in-law Traci became partners. Since that time, the restaurant has evolved into a more full service, family style establishment. Loyal customers will recognize some of the touches of the old drive in days and many still call us “Darrow’s Drive-In”.

We are proud to have added a fourth generation. In 2011, Randy & Traci’s son and daughter-in-law Eric and Jesse joined us and we look forward to their involvement. We’ve been very fortunate to have had wonderful employees, many who are close relatives and all who are friends. We want to thank everyone that has helped us over the years, especially Glenda who worked here for 50 years. They put the “family” in our family restaurant.

Our philosophy about food has stayed the same –– make it from scratch using the freshest ingredients. Soup made each morning, fresh baked bread, just brewed coffee and homemade pie. Good wholesome American cooking.

This is one of the best breakfast/lunch/dinner restaurant in Mackinaw City! A lot of stuff is homemade. The pies are homemade and amazing! My favorite breakfast item is the biscuits and gravy. I have never had even the slightest disappointment here, or left hungry. The people working here are very pleasant and friendly. Even when they have seemed busy they still keep things moving forward and do a great job it's great for families as well! We love this place....I hope you might too! Give them a try! Kid-friendliness: There were families there as we were there. The staff seemed very accommodating to everyone. It's a good sized place. Parking: They have their own ample sized free parking lot. Wheelchair accessibility: There were handicap parking spaces at the entrance. I used oneeasy entrance to the restaurant. I don't see a wheelchair posing an issue.
Stopped in tonight for dinner while on vacation. It took a bit to be seated, but it did seem to be the dinner rush. It also took a little bit to be waited on, but once I was everything was excellent. The waitress was very nice. I had the deep fried whitefish and it was so delicious, as was the bread. Large portions. I read good things about the mashed potatoes, but I personally wasn't crazy about them. Wish I had room to try their pie that everyone else was ordering. I would definitely recommend coming here.
We had the Roast Beef Melt, it was the the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had. The meat was so melt in your mouth tender, the perfect horseradish sauce and on rye bread made this sandwich AMAZING! Some hand battered onion rings topped in all off. Wish we had room for a slice of one of their delicious looking pies.
The food here was just so good! We relished the cajun seasoned Fresh Whitefish sandwich with a side of green beans, and the Whitefish Finger Basket with sides of mashed potatoes and chicken noodle soup, alongside hot coffee that came with free refills! Highly recommed.
There always seems to be a line, which isn't a bad thing. They seat you pretty fast and get your order in immediately. I got the cajun whitefish basket. The flavor of the seasonings with the mild white fish flavor was great! Fries are nice and crunchy! The food and service was great!
Homemade food at a fair price. I love eating here every time I am in Mackinaw City. If you go at the right time the wait is not to long. We had great service and the food was delicious as always. If by chance something does not come out like you expect, they will do everything thing to rectify the issue.
Absolutely wonderfully place to dine. From the crisp chilled salad, to the amazing fresh made bread, ordered a loaf to pick up tomorrow morning before I leave to the best fries I have had, to the delicious traditional whitefish, right down to the friendly pleasant servers.
Good food especially the broasted chicken! Wonderful pies and we really liked the banana cream pie; just the perfect sweetness! They were out of cherry pie so we got the 4 berry. A little too sweet. Oatmeal and butterscotch sounded very intriguing not to try. It was good but overly sweet. Definitely a place worth going.
Delicious food!! This was our first visit- but we will definitely return…! The Turkey Manhattan, roast beef sandwich, and cheeseburger & fries were all delicious. The service was exceptional!
We have been stopping by this place for years. I love Darrow’s! They have homemade everything pretty much. The pies are of course pretty killer - old school Americana baking at its best. Check out the rotating pie display as you walk in. It’s a work of art when it’s all stocked up. The onion rings are amazing. They make them from scratch and they come in a big golden pile of crunchy perfection. If I died after eating the last onion ring, I would go with a smile. Don’t even try to revive me. Nothing in what remains in life could be better than these onion rings.
