Whether in Jamaica or abroad, the experience of dealing with Jamaican public services sadly remains the same, slow, disorganized, and unprofessional. I initially traveled to Jamaica to renew my passport, but the process was a dead end. Hoping for a smoother experience, I turned to the Consulate General of Jamaica in Toronto. Unfortunately, the service there was no better.nI arrived at the consulate at 11:00 a.m. and was shocked to find people who had been waiting since 8:30 a.m. still sitting there, visibly frustrated. The environment was chaotic, the service sluggish, and the staff unprofessional. It took two hours just to reach the point where a customer could pay for their application, two hours!nSince it was my day off, I remained patient, determined to complete the process. While waiting, a staff member came by to check my documents. I handed over everything, including my birth certificate. He reviewed the documents and handed back the birth certificate, telling me it wasn't needed. Then he returned all the papers and told me to wait until my name was called.nEventually, I was called up to the processing counter. I submitted the documents, only for the agent to immediately ask for my birth certificate. I handed over the birth certificate I had brought, but she said she needed the original. I explained that it looks like I brought the a copy instead of the original, and by the way, the person who checked the documents initially told me I didn't need the birth certificate. If I had known otherwise, I would have retrieved the original hours earlier.nInstead of assisting me or showing any understanding, the agent rudely tossed the documents back at me and said she wouldn’t process the application. She told me to go back to the person who had told me I didn’t need the birth certificate. Her attitude was completely unprofessional, cold, dismissive, and lacking basic customer service skills.nI immediately asked to speak with her supervisor. She claimed the manager wasn’t available and had just stepped out. I insisted on waiting. Interestingly, the same person who originally checked my documents also suggested I speak with the manager. So I returned to the waiting area.nShortly after, the same processing agent was seen on the phone. I’m not sure who she spoke with, but soon after, she called me back to her desk and apologized for her earlier behavior. By then, however, the damage had been done. Her apology couldn’t undo how disrespected and dehumanized I felt.nShe finally processed the application, but I still had to wait another 30 minutes, this time, just to make a payment. By then, I was the only customer left in the office.nThe Jamaican Consulate in Toronto must do better. I’ve heard numerous complaints from others, and yet it seems nothing has changed. How can a government office, meant to represent Jamaica abroad, operate in such a disorganized and unprofessional manner? Is this truly the image we want to portray?nAfter 3 long months, I finally received my passport. I sincerely hope I never have to deal with that office again.
I’m deeply disappointed with my recent visit to the Consulate General of Jamaica. The experience was frustrating and extremely time-consuming, and it reflected a troubling lack of professionalism and organization.nnDespite arriving around 10:00 a.m., I wasn’t served until approximately 1:30 p.m., and only after expressing my concerns directly. The waiting area was full, yet staff seemed disengaged, one employee was even seen texting on their phone while clients waited. It gave the impression that serving the public was not a priority. This office felt disorganized, with little urgency or respect for people’s time. It’s unfortunate, as this experience reflects poorly on a place meant to represent Jamaica. I sincerely hope improvements are made.nAfter finally reviewing my paperwork, I was made to wait nearly another hour just to make a payment. This is unacceptable, especially for a basic passport renewal that costs $180 .nThe staff showed little urgency and minimal regard for clients’ time. It’s unclear who is managing the office, but it’s evident that there are serious gaps in leadership and accountability.nnAs someone who cares deeply about the image of Jamaica, this experience was disheartening. The lack of work ethic and poor operational flow reflect badly not just on the office but on the broader perception of our national institutions. This consulate needs serious attention and intervention from its leadership to improve service standards.nnIt’s unfortunate that I must return for further matters, as this visit felt more like a day-long ordeal than a routine administrative task. I truly hope that changes are made to improve the experience for others in the future.
I recently visited the Jamaica Consulate in Toronto and had a surprisingly positive experience. The office was clearly short-staffed on the day I went, but despite that, the team did their best to accommodate everyone as efficiently as possible.nnOne staff member in particular stood out, I believe his name was Rammond. He was very pleasant, professional, and genuinely helpful throughout the process. His calm demeanor and willingness to assist really made a difference, especially in a setting that could have easily felt chaotic due to the volume of people waiting.nnOverall, while the wait was a bit longer than expected, the courteous service and effort from the staff, especially Rammond, made it a worthwhile visit. Much respect to the team for doing their best under pressure!
Had an amazing experience at the Consulate General, went in to get my passport renewed. I was nervous going there because of all the bad reviews I saw online but nonetheless I went with faith. The gentleman by the name of Rammond who dealt with my application made the process simple & stress free. I am grateful I didn’t allowed all the negative reviews to stop me from going. Thanks again to that kind & wonderful gentleman that took his time to help me so I could get my passport renewed on time. A big thank you to the Consulate General of Jamaica.
I had the pleasure of being assisted by Rammond Smith at the Jamaican Consulate, and I must say he was exceptional. From the moment I arrived, it was clear that he genuinely loves his job and takes great pride in helping others. He goes above and beyond in every sense of the word.nnI had a situation that almost required a second trip, but thankfully, Mr. Smith was understanding and accommodating. He allowed me to wait and gather the necessary documents, which saved me a lot of time and stress. His patience and professionalism were truly commendable.nnAfter my experience, I read several other reviews and wasn’t surprised to see how many people echoed the same sentiments—everyone speaks highly of him. It honestly feels like he runs the entire place on his own, and yet he still manages to give each person his full attention and support.nnRammond Smith is truly an asset to the Consulate, and I hope his dedication and hard work are recognized and appreciated.
