Common Grill

Loved it. Clean open dining room where you don't feel like you're sitting on top of one another. We wanted to try everything so we settled on three appetizers, mushroom fries, whitefish dip and lobster spring rolls. Loved them all. Wait staff was awesome as well. Definitely worth the 20 minute drive from Ann Arbor.

We just had a most unsatisfactory experience. The food quality was "OK." However, the salmon portion ($28) was miniscule and it was served with three woody stalks of asparagus and a tiny serving of potatoes on a huge plate -- which made the portions look even punier. We pointed this out to our server and she sent the host over. We restated our complaint and he actually disputed what we were saying telling us that they figured the salad as part of the portion -- who doesn't? The most frustrating thing was the condescending way he talked to us. When the check came, I asked the server who else I could explain my concerns to and she said "I'm not allowed to take complaints" and said I should call. As I left, I pointed out to the host the manner in which had talked to us. He didn't apologize or otherwise demonstrate the least bit of interest in what I was saying. He simply said, "I wouldn't do that" and opened the door. Deplorable. This is not the service that has made the Common Grill famous. And it is certainly the sort service that, if experienced by a first-time patron, would at best discourage a second visit

Great food, fabulous environment. The murals on the wall our tribute to Hopper the artist into Chelsea the town. Best place to eat in Chelsea

Consistently great food. But is expensive, around $20-30 per person, dinner. Must plan around Purple Rose theatre schedule to avoid a long wait. Wish they'd bring back the old salad and raspberry dressing as a second choice.
