The conditions were appalling; the place reeked, and the change rooms were downright filthy. Moreover, the behavior of the students was abhorrent, with racist attitudes and attempted physical altercations targeting your black player number #15. Such behavior is utterly unacceptable and reflects poorly on the school's culture and values. I would strongly advise against participating in any future events hosted by this institution. To add to this admin was not prompt and some of our boys were not feeling safe . A chant from towards one of our black players “ Xander owns you “, was the last straw for me . Not to add on the inability of admin to diffuse the situation with multiple Bowles’s students waiting out of the locker room for our players. Strongly recommend to not send a child here unless you want a monster at home .
I went to this school back in the day, I was a dedicated athlete and took pride in my sports. When the day came for physical education testing, I broke several records the stretching one being my best record breaker. The one female phys ed teacher denied all of those tests that I had broken records on. Absolutely disgusting behaviour from a teacher, truly crushes a child’s motivation and from then on I had zero respect for this teacher. I was a professional athlete by this time and I ended up teaching the rest of the class on powerlifting, because the teacher had no idea what he was talking about. If your kids are passionate about sports and want to do well, I would not recommend this school. Otherwise the classes are fine and the education is ok as well.
Great school, gets a bad reputation at times because it’s in the older neighborhood, but doesn’t have nearly the drug issues as some of the newer schools in the more affluent areas, as the real problem kids have dropped out long before High School. It’s also not nearly as overcrowded as Churchill or other Schools nearby. I know people who transferred to Thursk and then transferred back again, plenty of others who transferred from St. Francis and Churchill. Didn’t seem to have the bad cliques a lot of High Schools are known for and no gang problems or fighting. The Math Department was spectacular when I was there, I barely even opened a book for my University Math Courses because I was so ahead. Great English and Social Studies Teachers as well.nnGreat Trades Programs tons of space for the Art Department, Automotive, Wood Working, Multimedia Space and Band. New renovations have added much more brightness to the school and a much better cafeteria. Great Theatre as well I wish they used more often. It’s an easy school to get around, no real bottlenecks in the hallways as they’re wide and it’s well designed. Athletics was really well supported one of the top Rugby and Field Hockey Programs in Calgary and they always punched above their weight in Football, Volleyball and Basketball. Everyone I knew from Bowness ended up either going to University or doing a trade, a real good mix of students that all found a future career at this school.
Though school pride has definitely deflated year over year, overall this school has gotten better. Yes, drugs are everywhere. Yes, parties happen no more than Aberhart, but if one finds the right crowd, they'll do fine. This school has no shortage of smart people, hard working trades people, and passionate teachers. Bowness as a community is in a redevelopment stage, and is moving away from a time period that included the company of the hell's angels biker gang. This community seems have more of a town-like personality than any other in Calgary, and this keeps the school tightly knit with the people living there. Bowness High physically is in dismal condition, especially in the math wing, but there are comprehensive renovations planned. I am happy to hear that this school will continue to serve NW Calgary into the future. I'm happy to graduate from here in June!
would not recommend this school to my fellow Canadians, this school may look very modern from the front but the insides look like a 1900's prison, due to this the learning environment for the students is sub par and due to this, focusing in class is one of this school's primary issues. however the variety of courses this school offers makes this review a 2 star instead of 1
