About

Integrated Cool Climate Cuisine

Story

Voted as one of the best new restaurants in canada by air canada enroute and where magazine, backhouse has a holistic ash and ember approach to great canadian cuisine. The aroma of peach wood as it burns in the brick oven and wood-fired grill gives off an organic mystique and creates a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. Avoiding restaurant conventions such as a "signature dish", backhouse has a continuously evolving menu with a commitment to enlightened hospitality and integrated cool climate cuisine.

"People ask me if I’m Italian. I say “I don’t know, but I do have a garden in my back yard, make about 1,000 litres of tomato sauce every year, and have over 70 prosciuttos in my cantina…”The food at Ruffino’s is soul satisfying & belly filling like Nona’s. It is warm and welcoming like the fires we cook on. I want to welcome you with open arms to come join us at my “second” house. If we slow down, spend time with eachother, eat great food and drink great wine, then we will learn what it means to be a family and a community. Ruffino’s is the Italian restaurant you wished was just around the corner, and now it is!Cheers,Chef Ryan Crawford"

Fantastic experience! We used to come here when it was back house and we were excited to come back since the borders open. Such a fantastic experience from start to finish. It was also great to have Leland as our server who gave us so many great recommendations and really took the time to show us the snack bar and wine shop next door. Will be back!!
Yesterday my friends and I brought our kids to this great Italian restaurant in Niagara on the lake. The food was great and the staff were so patient. We had a party of seventeen or eighteen people, half were young children. The servers were so understanding with changes, helped recommend different options for our kids, and managed our group so well. My kids enjoyed the spaghetti and meatballs. My husband and I really loved the wood oven pizza.
Been here couple if times we are craving for pizza and pasta when visiting Niagara wineries. We always enjoy the food. A little expensive. But service is good and it’s cool to see your food being prepped in the open kitchen.
Came here for the first time on Aug 2nd. Pretty busy on a weekday. Got seated at the chef table. The chef was doing a good job having the whole kitchen under control and working very hard but I found it stressful watching him cranking all those plates by himself since I came here to chill a bit. The rest of the team was hesitant to assist him as he was doing his thing, really hard to seamlessly jump in and out to assist him. Calamari could be better, I didn’t like the batter too much. Our server was good and the vibe was good.
The food was lovely. We had the Arancini and Calamari as our appetizers, plus an order of the focaccia, the Pizza with Burrata and Mortadella and Cannoli as our dessert. Our server was very good and she found a way of making up a special version of the Aperol cocktail for me, which I really appreciated. A quick word of advise: please don't call you lovely sourdough bread "focaccia" because focaccia it surely isn't! If you take a trip to Liguria where focaccia is from, you'll know why. The pizza cooked in the wood burning oven was delicious!
Food was very good and service was amazing. I can’t wait to come back. Loved everything we tried. The sourdough pizza crust was really good and the pepperoni on our pizza was thin and flavourful. We tried a tropical fruit that’s grown right here in Ontario for the first time called paw paw in the panna cotta. If your unsure of where to go for dinner in Niagara on the lake and are looking for Italian food, I would highly recommend this place.
Had a great night out for dinner with friends. The staff were very friendly and we sat where the food was prepared and chefs answered all our questions. It was amazing to see the food prepared in front of our eyes. The night started off with some sourdough bread, following by some tasty appetizers. The Risotto Balls were super flavourful and melted in your mouth. The chef surprised us with something special before our main course a beet ravioli which tingled our taste buds. My wife and I shared the Carbonara and the Ruffino Pizza and were blown away. Would definitely come back with our friends next time and bring the rest of our family next time we are in the region.
Ambience - Was really good, the music was perfect as well. Food - It just maybe us but was sorely disappointed. We ordered vegetarian no meat dishes. The 'focaccia' bread is basically just sourdough, I've had focaccia'on multiple occasions but just to verify I googled and it was nothing like the image. The tortellini was quite flavorful but it seems that the pasta was not cooked, or maybe it was frozen before resulting in a hardened texture. The Daniella pizza was ok, we've never tried potato in a pizza and so many green veggies, it was different. Also, got the Arancini, was ok as well, just deep fried rice and cheese balls. Would've appreciated if the server had come check on for a water refill. Maybe it was a busy day for them. Wouldn't return.
Delicious food! We tried a variety of the appetizers and mains, and we were impressed with everything. Super fresh ingredients and very flavourful. We especially enjoyed the lamb ragu and the gnocchi fritti. The indoor seating space is cozy and fun; however, the outdoor patio is a bit more simple. Staff is generally very friendly and attentive as well. A must stop when in NOTL!
Absolutely delicious food and wonderful service every visit. I’m usually not a huge fan of charcuterie boards but I really loved this one split into two photos. We always sit at the chefs table. We love to watch the chefs. You can tell they are passionate in their work :
