I've been working as an Amazon Flex driver at the DON8 warehouse since November 2022, and what I've seen recently is extremely concerning. This warehouse has started treating its drivers, particularly Canadian citizens, in a way that’s beyond unacceptable.nnIn 2022, Amazon Flex offered shifts of 4 hours with pay ranging from $88 to $100, depending on the complexity of the route. Now, they’ve cut those shifts down to just 3 or 3.5 hours, paying a mere $66 to $77. Despite this reduction in pay and hours, they still expect us to deliver the same number of packages as before, leaving us with less time, fewer resources, and more pressure to meet unrealistic expectations. This isn’t just unfair to the drivers—it’s leading to poorer service for customers as well.nnThe most alarming part? It seems they’re systematically reducing opportunities for Canadian citizens. They’ve cut back on hours and pay for Canadian workers while bringing in international students and work permit holders willing to accept lower wages. I’ve noticed a disturbing trend where the warehouse is primarily hiring people from specific ethnic backgrounds, like Punjabis and Muslims, while sidelining Canadians and people from other backgrounds.nnAmazon started as an American company and branched into Canada with the promise of good jobs and fair treatment. Now, it’s starting to feel like we’re working in a warehouse that belongs in a country where labor exploitation is the norm. This is not the Amazon I signed up to work for, and it’s certainly not what Canadian workers deserve.nnAmazon needs to take a hard look at how it’s treating its workers and start making changes that reflect the values it was built on. If you’re considering working here, think twice—your time and effort are worth more than what they’re offering.
I do Amazon Flex as a side hustle. I originally liked this location despite mostly getting downtown shifts because they were friendly Weekday Shifts and provide their drivers with free snacks and supplies. However, when I did my first weekend shift, I was disappointed by how the workers treated me. One of the employees who were directing the cars kept yelling at me to slow down when I was following all of the warehouse speed limits 8km. Then the same worker repeatedly yelled at me to stop my vehicle when I wasn’t even moving. When I finally parked and was free to start packing, the same employee along with another one proceeded to tell me to get back in my vehicle because another car was coming up behind me to park. They told me they would let me know when I can come out. Once the driver behind me parked, I stayed in my car for 5m and they still didn’t advise me to come out. I had to get out myself and ask the workers again if I can come out now, which they then proceeded to say “oh, yeah”. I’m all for the safety of people but honestly, if you have a problem don’t take out on people who are already following directions. I avoid delivering for this location now.
I ordered some Washers for my Garden Hose on Amazon.ca yesterday, Friday, around 6 pm. It only costs $1.55. I received it today around noon. No delivery fee, as a Prime member! Amazing! I love Amazon!
