Story

Zanzibar is an upscale restaurant that features the best in southern cuisine and other specialties such as Walleye cakes, Soul Rolls, Shrimp & Grits, Smothered Steak, Turkey Chops, Catfish, Pasta dishes, Macaroni & Cheese, and Greens. Over 50 Martini & Specialty drinks, and of course the famous Peach Cobbler and Bread Pudding.

Located in historical Shaker Square, Zanzibar Soul Fusion has a rich history that dates back to 1985, when some of these original recipes was born in the kitchen of the Carnegie Hotel, by the hands of Angie’ s Soul Food (Now Angie’ s Soul Café) founder, Angie.

An earlier version of Angie’ s upscale cuisine was active from 2002 until 2007, as Carolina’ s Southern Cuisine (17322-24 Harvard). If you ever had the opportunity to visit Carolina’ s, then you will recognize some familiar items at Zanzibar, such as the Catfish Fingers, Fried Green Tomatoes, Smothered Chops, Chicken & Biscuits, Bar BQ Salmon, Chicken & Waffles, Red & Grape Kool-Aid served in the Mason Jars, and an extensive Martini list.

But the most popular event was the Sunday “ All-U-Can Eat Brunch Buffet” that will make its return at Zanzibar. With our rich history from Angie’ s Soul Food, our signature dishes from Carolina’ s, and with the introduction of Executive Chef Tony at the helm adding even more to the foundation we are sure to have something that will surely please you. My family and I had a reservation for 15 people & the service Brittany gave us was extraordinary. She was patient & remembered what everyone ordered without giving us the wrong food. She was quick on her toes with our drinks and food. She was apart of our family while we ate. Oh now the food was delicious no complaints great portions and the prices were shockingly great. 5 stars from my family and I. Thank you Brittany :)

I've been for dinner and the food was good and service was also pretty good.. so that's why I wanted to bring my friend from NYC. She is used to all the good food in the big city and I wanted to give her a taste of Cleveland. Early in the day they serve brunch I believe until two.. We looked up the restaurant menu because my friend is from out of town but the brunch information was not online. So we were surprised with the limited menu options when we arrived. We overlooked this because we love brunch but overall was not impressed and would have rather came back for lunch. We were also a little disappointed when the older couple next to us got the order off the dinner menu even though we were told only brunch. The most frustrating part was when my friend asked for a slice of banana from the kitchen to feed her 6 month baby because there was no kids menu but there were banana pancakes on the brunch menu. The chef denied her the item and said he did not have any extra bananas. So we took another approach and ordered the banana pancakes but asked for just the bananas and not the pancakes so we would not mess up his "banana to pancake ratio" .. we eventually got a few banana slices and charged for a fruit bowl. Unfortunately my friend was not impressed. I will probably return one day for dinner with some friends. Who knows..

Tanisha our server was Great! Food portions poor, very small. Atmosphere Great! Decor beautiful. Other patrons courteous and pleasant! Overall nice experience!

I have been to Zanzibar several times and for the most part I’ve been disappointed both by the service and by the food. When you want folks to think they are getting an “upscale” dining experience then the service and food are supposed to be excellent. Sadly, this has not been the case and my last experience compelled me to write a review. Upon arriving my date and I sat at the bar and ordered a catfish finger appetizer, it came out quickly and was very tasty but for the portion of fish you could probably give a little more sauce for two people to share. Next, we ordered our entree’s, my date ordered the vegetarian platter with greens on the side and I ordered the honey fried chicken with greens and substituted candied yams for the house potatoes. We both wanted tomato and onions for our greens and specifically asked for muffins to go with our order (because they always seem to forget to bring them, every time we’ve been there...every time). When our food arrived, no tomato’s and onions, no muffins, my date ate a spoonful of black eye peas and they were sooo hot she burned her mouth which led me to believe that they were warmed up in a microwave before coming to the table. On the other hand my food was cold, cold chicken, cold yams, cold greens, which got colder while we waited for the tomato’s and onions and muffins. I don’t mind waiting for my food if it is hot when you bring it to me but I just don’t see waiting for cold food. Another aspect of “upscale” dining is visual appeal, the bar area is so dark that you needed light from your cell phone to read the menu, and the sight of the kitchen help coming in the dining area with dirty aprons and skull caps on to speak to friends is just not what you want to see. I finally just asked for a box to take my food home. I don’t want you to think I am elitist or bourgeois, I simply want a certain kind of dining experience and don’t mind paying well and tipping over and above for it. Sadly, while wanting to support minority owned businesses, I just can’t see myself coming back...

Friday evenings are busy but only had to wait to be seated 15 min. Make reservations especially if you're going at a busy time. Took a little to long for appetizers to come but when they did the food came right after. Everything was tasty and delicious. I feel like their portions can be a bit better, especially for the prices they want. Waiter was nice. It was cold so bring a sweater or something. Overall a good experience.
