I have heard good reviews about this Shanghai food restaurant, so my gf and I decided to try it for the first time. As we entered, we were greeted amicably by the host and the waiters. Since we were hungry, we ordered four dishes that stood out to us on the menu. The prices are somewhat higher than other restaurants of its kind in Toronto. The steamed buns, their specialty, were pretty good. We got the truffle pork steamed buns and the crab roe soup steamed bun, and both dishes were fragrant and flavorful be warned that the soup is very hot. The braised pork belly was cooked well, the meat very easy to chew but slightly too sweet to my taste. Lastly the prawn with salted yolk was decent, but did not stand out to the other dishes. Overall, I enjoyed the clean and friendly atmosphere, and the food did satisfy us. Should I happen to crave for Shanghai food while in the area, we may visit again.
This Shanghaiese Restaurant is located outside Markham, and Richmond Hill and about additional 15 minutes drive from Hwy 7 & Warden Avenue. It opened in the strip mall along with non- Asian stores. The food there were GREAT and we can’t wait to go back there to eat. The soup dumplings were stuffed with meat and truffles and tasted so food. are must eat desserts! The best I had ever tried in my life, even better than the restaurant I had in Hong Kong and Taipei.
Excellent experience here every time! We had couple of time in this restaurant, good for family gathering or just two. If you love the SHANGHAI style food or Shanghai snack , you shouldn’t miss this place. The food quality is equally good as what you can eat in Shanghai, We’d give the chef the a thumb up of maintaining a high standard of its traditional recipe. As for the price, hum... you know what, steamed dumpling for example, is a traditional snack in Shanghai resident’s daily life. in today’s Shanghai the price of a set of steamed dumpling can be a huge difference, you can get it for 10RMB from a street vendor, or you might spend 10 times more money from a famous branded restaurant, depends on the material, quality and of cause the taste.
Came to Yu Garden for a quick snack in between lunch and dinner. There was about 2 to 3 tables due to the time we went. We ordered 2 noodles in soup, 1 spring roll and 1 beef pancake dish. The beef pancake was awesome probably one of the best I ever had. They only accept debit or cash. If we are by the area again, we would probably drop by and try other dishes.
Love this place!! Service was okay. But the food was bangin! Super juicy soupy xiao long baos and pan fried dumplings. Everything was not too salty. And the skin on the steamed soup dumplings were reallly thin, but too too thin that the soup leaks. I definitely recommend getting the pork and shrimp steamed dumplings and the truffle ones. Both are aan experience to have. That said it is kind of pricy. They charge you the non-vip price. And for a fee you can get the card and pay the VIP price.
WHAT TO TRY?! The lovely dumplings. You can even try the mega dumplings! The dishes are Shanghai inspired and include flavours that aren’t too spicy. The dumplings had a lot of juice inside and they also had interesting versions of the dumpling too. So other than the typical pork dumplings, they had spicy dumpling, veggie dumpling and even truffle oil dumpling. I honestly think that sticking with the traditional siao lung bao dumpling is the best. Full of flavour and the meat was very tender and soft. Their red braised pork noodle was also very good. Too bad there’s no veggies in the soup noodle though or else this dish would be a great dish to have on its own as a meal! The pork hock meat was very tender though. Layers of fat alternate with the meat and each cube was nicely cooked! LAST TIP?! If you sign up with their membership card, you get member pricing. So ask them about it if you live around the area and will see yourself going here often. The mega dumpling has a lot of juice and it’s really hot, so be careful slurping the juice!!!
It is really a dis-appointing visit. Although the quality of food is not bad, there is absolutely a problem of service. When we were there today, there were two one male and one female serving. The guy seems to be the manager because when he found that we wanted to place order, he did not come to us but asked the waitress to attend us. There was no greeting on arrival nor at departure. It gives people a feeling that they don't care. A good restaurant is a combination of food and service. I believe that the service of this restaurant would not improve as the leader is even not aware of his problem.
Get the noodles. We had the scallion and dried shrimp. Excellent. Their giant soup dumplings are a novelty but not as good as the usual style. Overall, their XLB are fine, but Ding Tai Fung and Shanghai Dim Sum are better. The scallion pancake is very good, but Shanghai Dim Sum's version is exceptional. Service is good and atmosphere is pleasant. Worth a stop if you're looking for noodles.
Quite expensive for an Asian dim sum restaurant with a moderate serving amount. Came here after seeing the review on BlogTO to try the big soup dumpling in particular, but the broth tasted like water. There was also shrimp in it -- something that may not be a concern for others, but I'm allergic and it did not specify shrimp was included. I liked the noodle dishes, however. But not enough for me to go back. I love soup dumplings though, so it's too bad! But there are definitely other restaurants you could be going to for Shanghai style dim sum.
The ambient is nice, their specialties are xiao lung bao, dumplings and fried buns, the other dim sums were ok, the noodles were poor in flavor, the service is average and it was a bit pricey!
