Watershed Park

Story

Watershed Park is a 153-acre temperate rain forest public park located in Olympia, Washington that supplied almost all the city's water from privately established wells in the late 1800s. The city acquired and operated the wells starting in 1917 until the 1950s when the municipal water source was replaced. In 1955 the forest was to be logged and the land sold but strong local opposition resulted in an ordinance preserving the area as a city park. Throughout, remnants of the waterworks are visible from the park trails.HistoryWater wells for the city of Olympia were first created in the area now comprising Watershed Park in the late 19th century. Influential Western Washington businessman Henry Clay Heermans bought the entire waterworks in 1909, and sold it to the City of Olympia in 1917. After operating the wells into the 1950s, the city planned to log the area and sell the property, leading to a Washington Supreme Court battle that led to the area's preservation, with a city ordinance protecting the area presently.

Beautiful!! I couldn't believe I was in the middle of the city. I couldn't hear any of the city noises, just the creeks and birds. I will be going back and next time I would love to be able to do some meditation there. It would be an ideal spot!! It didn't feel like I walked over a mile because the view was astounding. I would have loved to be able to do a second go round if I didn't have to be home for the kids.

1.4 mile loop through well defined dirt trail & boardwalk over low wet lands. One mod. difficult hill to tackle depending on who's doing the tackling. Great place to come ffor those who love nature, yet no travel necessary as in city limits! Dog friendly. Porta potty avail.on site

Beautiful park. Great for walks alone or with kids. I try to go running her as often as possible. There are a few steep spots, but it's pretty flat. It can be a little wet on the trail in areas, but nothing too bad. Lots to see and it's usually very quiet and peaceful. There is a portapotty at the top of the trailhead on Henderson.

This is a good loop with varied elevation. A little more than expected actually but good. There is also a decent variety of scenery with some big trees to enjoy along the way. I found the path and bridges to be well kept. My only quibbles are that my friends and I somehow got off track and exited when we meant to stay on the loop. So I felt the signage wasn’t the best but once you figure it out it’s good. Also, just a personal issue but, it is a wetland and my allergies are sensitive to these areas (alder mostly). Otherwise a nice little gem in the Oly area. Enjoy!
