Family owned Minnesota resort. 8 cabins on 1/2 mile of lake shore on beautiful Island Lake. Reservations by phone or in person only.
Valhalla Resort opened in 1929 and was built by Elinas and Emma Grotnes, who were Norwegian and Swedish immigrants to America as children and met in WWI while serving in the United States Army. Their son Len and his wife Norma Jean continued the tradition, as has their son Stephen and daughter Tamie. The resort is located on the east shore of Island Lake, about 20 miles east of Detroit Lakes and 26 miles west of Park Rapids, and just north a bit from State Highway #34. The Grotnes family has enjoyed providing their guests with a beautiful northern Minnesota lake experience with a quiet, "old-timey" atmosphere. Eight charming, clean cabins along a half mile of lakeshore give privacy as well as room to walk, bicycle and explore the woods. Families have returned to us for as many as 5 generations and the young ones play with 5th generation "Grotnes" children. Although there are no longer any milk cows in the stone-foundation barn, we are proud to have been named a Minnesota Century Farm. Fishing and swimming and summer fun are our forte, with several golf courses in the towns nearby, as well as theaters, shopping, restaurants, Itasca State Park, Tamarac Wildlife Refuge, various artist events, a local wine-stomp in the fall...so many things to do... IF you can tear yourself away from Island Lake for the day or evening after a spectacular sunset!
Valhalla~ a quiet place for fishing or family time, a place to get away from it all... a place where memories are made and generations return year after year to their "old-timey" log cabin or fully modern frame cabin~ each by the lakeside with its own dock and boat. Valhalla. ...Heavenly!
