Union Bay Campground

Story

The Porcupine Mountains, or Porkies, are a group of small mountains spanning the northwestern Upper Peninsula of Michigan in Ontonagon and Gogebic counties, near the shore of Lake Superior. The area is part of the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. The Porcupine Mountains were named by the native Ojibwa people, supposedly because their silhouette had the shape of a porcupine.HistoryThe Porcupine Mountains were the site of copper mining in the 19th century. One of these mines is the Nonesuch Mine, which operated sporadically from 1867 to 1912. The Porkies are also the location of a large stand of old growth forest, and home to many black bears. The area is popular among tourists, especially the Lake of the Clouds in the heart of the mountains. There have been numerous bear sightings.GeologyThe most striking geological feature of the Porcupine Mountains is the long basalt and conglomerate escarpment parallel to the Lake Superior shore and overlooking Lake of the Clouds, a continuation of the same copper-bearing bedrock found farther northeast on the Keweenaw Peninsula. A second ridge farther inland, on the other side of Lake of the Clouds, includes Summit Peak, the highest point in the mountains at 1,958 feet (595 m). Rivers, waterfalls, swamps, and lakes lie between the rocky outcroppings. There are a number of waterfalls on the Presque Isle River in the extreme western side of the park.

Smaller State Park campground with amazing staff. The staff alone enhanced our experience here. Clean restrooms/showers. Sites somewhat uneven due to age and substrate, but all in all roomy. Nice dock near the boat launch that goes out on the lake for a "Superior" view. Best sites are at the water, but they go fast!
Nice location on Lake Superior. Many of the sites are quite small and close together, however. In some areas, you definitely get the vibe of camping in a grassy parking lot just a few feet away from 4-5 others. There are a few larger and a few more isolated sites, but those are the exceptions. There also seems to be a lot of traffic on the camp roads, probably because of the density of the campsites. All sites have electric and there is a modern bathroom and shower building. They have a new 2021 playground. Can’t beat the Porkies for hiking, scenery, and stars, though! I will probably stay at the private campground just down the road next time. Cellular coverage is spotty at best despite what the coverage map says so be sure to download any maps, e-books, trail descriptions, or geocaches before you come. PRO TIP: Do not put out an awning unless you are there to immediately take it down/in because stiff winds can come in off the lake without much warning.
Beautiful spots next to the lake. Bathrooms are kept clean and rangers at least one come through with dog biscuits for the pups. Very nice staff. Only downside on a personal note was we were unable to see the sunset directly from our spot on the lake because we couldn't manage to beat other campers to the nice rock to sit on out by the shoreline. Apparently its every man for himself come sundown, so plan accordingly.
Nice campground but they really pack people in. I was expecting more of a secluded campsite. The site by the lake were awesome. Clean bathrooms and showers. Nice base for exploring the Porcupine Mountains. Be prepared for little to no internet connection if that is something you need.
If you have want to actually have fun, don't come here. DNR are very power hungry and police everything you do from when you can ride bikes to how late you can hangout with family on different campsites. Not sure if other sites were big complainers or not but we were just sitting around the fire talking and the curly pubed DNR "agent" kind of hoping he sees this told us to split up and go back to our sites or we would get kicked out in the morning. Absolutely ridiculous. I wouldn't recommend coming to here at all.
We had a fantastic camp sight nice and close to Lake Superior. Taking a hike to The Lake of the Clouds lookout is a must!Location: 5/5
We stayed here for two nights in August 2021. We stayed in site 12, on the bottom road across from the beach. Most notable is sites must share the power pole with the neighboring site. This means you need a really long power cord or you'll have to park really close to the neighbors. The sites on the lower road are fine, but the sites on the top and basically just parked in a field with a few trees. The bathroom and shower facilities were clean. With the amount of sites here they could definitely use a second one. There is a playground for the kids. The beach in front of the campground is a rocky shoreline and was beautiful. The best sites here are on the shoreline and they book up as soon as they open for reservations. Lots of hiking in the area and things to see. Many waterfalls in the area. We would stay here again only if we could secure a site on the bottom road, close to the beach.
Beautiful campground. This is one of my favorite places to watch the stars at night in the whole country. Campground is always extremely packed. Quiet hours 8pm DNR overboard. My neighbors were not friendly and made a noise complaint when no one in my group was even speaking. It was 7:50pm I filled up a self inflatable chill bean chair quickly and quietlynot with an air pump and got yelled at by DNR. "Was told I would be watched that night" Still walked to the beach to watch the stars which was amazing. I have stayed here 3 times and will not again. Hopefully reserve a cabin or more remote site next time
This is a great campground. If you’re able to reserve a site on the lower level you’ll enjoy the lake from your site. These sites go quickly so heads up.There’s also a few areas that everyone can gain access to the rocky shoreline of Superior as well. Site #81 our campsite was littered with trash in the fire pit and tent stakes on the ground. We don’t believe anyone from the state park staff cleaned up the site prior to our arrival. We arrived around 8pm so they had at least four hours to tidy up our site. Also the ground was very uneven ,no gravel just a soft grassy/dirt that gets really muddy when it rains. There is one bathhouse for the entire campground definitely could benefit from a second bath house. Bath house was decent cleanliness wise. We only used the two handicap showers , the shower heads on those were great! It was lovely to be able to adjust the water temperature. The water was always able to reach a warmer temp. The hot water heaters seem to have done their job! It’s a very busy bathhouse, hand dryers going off all hours of the night they are very loud! The women’s restrooms were completely out of toilet paper for hours on Monday 8/3/20 , I had to bring my own toilet paper to use the park’s restrooms keep that in mind. Some of the campsites on the upper level are in a big treeless field. The campsites along the lake are fantastic! Those sites book up super fast.Beautiful rocky shoreline. The views along superior are breathtaking! The huge beautiful rocks along the shoreline of superior are able to be walked on /climbed on. We definitely have a love of the area and we will return! Plenty of wooded trails for hiking not a far drive from the campground.Beautiful nature beautiful area.
Very friendly staff who work in the camp, there was another person who by mistake had made his camp in our spot, they resolved the situation easily, we ended up making new friends with the people who were there, very clean bathrooms and excellent location to get to know Porcupine Mountain. Restrooms: Very clean
