The heart of Transcona's vibrant history and culture.
Transcona Museum was founded in 1967 as Transcona’s Centennial Project celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada. Today, the museum is located in the only municipally designated heritage building in Transcona. This beautiful and historic building was originally constructed by the Bank of Toronto (1925) and later served as the Transcona Municipal Office. This building is owned and operated by the City of Winnipeg.
Today, the Transcona Museum maintains and promotes the history, stories and community spirit of Transcona thanks to the service and dedication of the many volunteers, board members and staff, and especially the municipal support of the City of Winnipeg and former City of Transcona elected officials and staff. Thanks to the vision of Paul Martin, the Transcona Town Council and the first museum board members, the Transcona Museum has continued to serve our community across four decades, through to this day.
The Transcona Museum was created to preserve Transcona’s history for future generations. Over the years, the museum has acquired an extensive collection of artefacts, photographs and documentary records that together tell the story of our community history. These collections include everything from railway artefacts, items from early Transcona businesses, historic clothing and household objects, to special natural and cultural history collections that include over 8000 moths and butterflies from around the world, 1000 Manitoba bird eggs and 3500 archaeological/First Nations artefacts from throughout Manitoba.
