My friends who just celebrated their 25th anniversary were married at the WAG so I love that weddings are still being held here. After living in other cities and coming home, I also really appreciate the unique architecture that is so distinctly "Winnipeg". The gallery itself is lovely for showcasing art. It has a nice media area to display cinematic presentations (I remember watching the Cannes commercial festivals here). There are amazing jazz concerts to check out too.

I've visited on a few occasions and the galleries are always interesting and informative. The last time I visited I went to see the Winnipeg Music Festival, and the auditorium was very nice, sound was great, however the chairs were incredibly squeaky. They are spinning chairs, and I had to consciously be careful not to move while the performers were singing so that the chair's horrible squeaking wouldn't distract anyone. Other than that, would've been 5 stars.

Lovely building and versatile galleries that attract exceptional shows. But it doesn't take long to go through because it's altogether kind of small. It'll be much bigger once the Inuit Art Centre is added on. The WAG also offers a good selection of public art classes.

I really enjoyed the Winnipeg Art Gallery during my visit in early January, 2018. For me, the most moving experience was walking into the Academic Tradition from Europe and Canada 1600-1900 room on the 3rd floor. As I entered, I felt an overwhelmingly eerie sense of chills run down my spine. The settler-style art lined up around the walls, and the Indigenous art in a row along the middle, surrounded by (or caged in by) glass casings. It also felt reminiscent of colonization and my hopes for contemporary reconciliation. Overall, my favourite part was, of course, the massive collection of Indigenous art from various nations across the country. Next to this, The Vessel exhibit by David Altmejd, was definitely one of the most powerful exhibits worth taking in. I thought it representative of the contemporary world and the mind of man: vast, expansive and confusing, ridden with synthetic material. Defiantly worth checking out!
