Love this place. I bought my piano and my guitar here. Everytime I've gone in here, Al has been the one working, and he's great to do business with. There was even a seperate occasion where I went in here to play a little bit, and some d-bag that had more skill than me heard me went up to the piano next to me and decided to upstage me, and after he left, Al noticed I had stopped playing, and he said something like "Don't worry about that guy, just keep playing". I really respected the heck out of him for saying that
Spoke with Al about what I was looking for, he was very honest and pleasant do deal with; it was like calling an old friend for advice, which he gave. Had the guitar shipped to me, it shipped very fast, well-packed and was in perfect condition. I am very pleased with my new G&L. Based on my experience, I have no hesitation in recommending the Rock Shop.
Above and beyond service!! We needed strings, found what we needed quickly, and my son got a quick leaaon in playing before we left. As he was stringing it at home, one broke and we returned with our guitar and Al helped us with the issue, and tuned it and fixed another little issue for us. Very impressed with the knowledge and extra time taken to make ensure my son has a good start to learn to play. We are returning for certain.
Brought my 9y/o daughter to the store a couple the other weekend. She had been pulling my ear about getting a guitar since last year as so I finally decided I would give it a try and talked with Al and had all kinds of questions. I decided to go ahead and get her a small blue Beaver Creek acoustic that was up on his wall now that I knew what we were in for. I was really happy with the level of knowledge and information he was able to provide to a guitar newbie. I asked a lot of questions! All was great, nice guy, not pushy at all and gave an honest opinion as if he were in my shoes. Above all that he even gave special attention in configuring and getting it setup for my daughter to use knowing we were out of town and wouldn't likely be back in the city for a while. Overall I couldn't have been happier with the level of service and care we got that day and will definitely be stopping by the shop the next time we are in town to have it adjusted/re-tuned.
Had a setback recently, Broke my shoulder and that made using my guitars very difficult. Decided to explore an option .. a small bodied guitar. Again Al with his skill set evaluated my options within his existing stock.. Finally settled on a small body Fender CT 140. Great choice for me at this time and it should be a very suitable travel guitar. This is my 4th guitar purchase from this location. Also have a 12 string, an Ovation and a hollow body Gretsch. Add in a couple of amps to the mix and it is probably evident that I have a comfort level with this outlet. Yes this has been a Go To Location for me. Maybe to the chagrin of my wife.I do ask for a lot of forgiveness at home.
Great store. Al spent nearly an hour helping me out and offering advice on gear setup. Offered plenty of options and insight, was very informative and helpful to this newbie. Never tried to sell me on anything, he seemed to want to make sure I found something I was happy with. Even offered tips to help maximise my current setup until I do go ahead with an upgrade. Will definitely be keeping an eye out for his store on Reverb. Thanks!
Buckle up, this is a long one: I took my guitar here for a general tune-up after it had been collecting dust over the past couple months. When I got it back, it sounded better than it had before, like, -way- better. I've had this guitar at Long & Mcquade, Axe, Innovations, etc over the years and those guys never did as good of a job as Rock Shop. I also paid less here than I did anywhere else. An aside: Now, for what it's worth, it's no secret that the prices on hardware here are high, but at the same time, imagine owning a business inside of one of the world's biggest malls. Leasing space here is probably super expensive, so they have to price things to stay on top of that + other business expenses. It is life ‍
Stumbled in to the rock shop while exploring the mall. The guy working at the time was very friendly and helpful. I was just browsing and overheard him with another customer, his knowledge and customer service were top notch. Next time I'm in the market for a guitar or amp, the rock shop will be one of my first stops.
I purchased a Fender Powercaster from this store and it was shipped to Airdrie, AB and at my door in less than 48hrs. The guitar was absolutely amazing, but sadly had some grounding issues. I immediately contacted Al, the owner, regarding the issue and acted right away to get things resolved. He went as far as even having a ZOOM meeting with me after store hours to help diagnose the problem. Al went above and beyond to help me out. Instead of making me ship the guitar all the way back to Edmonton, he contacted Fender and immediately hooked me up with a Fender-authorized repair centre in Calgary. Got my guitar back from warranty repair in less than a week in perfect condition and I couldn't be a happier customer. I look forward to doing more business with the Rock Shop in the very near future. You just don't get that kind of service these days. I can really tell Al is passionate about what he does and stands behind everything he sells. I am living proof.
DO NOT take your guitar for a set up here. Especially if you have any string/fret buzz. I waited 3 days and paid 52 bucks with strings to find out the problem I brought my guitar in for wasn't fixed. Not only that but the owner wouldn't even acknowledge the buzz saying he couldn't hear it. Here's how it went: I brought my guitar in on Sunday to be told, with uncertainty, that it should be done tomorrow. During my visit he had me play to try and show the buzz and said he wasn't hearing it and mentioned my nails were a little long on my left hand; As if to suggest that may be the problem, which I knew it wasn't. This was a slight red flag. Then when asking about string guages, he seemed very unsure and practically said I should choose between the two tunings I use and stick with one. Previous management here actually gave me recommendations and I have NEVER been told to stick with one over the other before. This was a red flag. But I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt because maybe he was tired and I've never had a problem with The Rock Shop before. I call Monday around 5pm to be told it will be a couple days - then a few days, minutes later. Didn't receive a call until Wednesday night, 30 minutes before close. I show up Thursday and try out my guitar to be disappointed in hearing the buzzing still. He proceeded to play my guitar through an amp which I could hear a bit of the buzz here and there. He claimed it was the amp making the noise not the guitar and also seemed to play it off as it was the chord connecting to the amps fault. So he then tried another amp, adding even more distortion to try and prove nothing was wrong. Of course you won't hear the problem with distortion maxed and the amp cranked. After I left, I went to Long & McQuade on the North Side and guess what, the guitar tech there heard the string buzz RIGHT AWAY! The gentleman was sympathetic with me and made some minor adjustments that I wouldn't have to pay for. Not only was the buzz mostly remedied but I left satisfied and not feeling any belittlement. I was also educated on what the issues could be and a slight issue was pointed out with a stripped bolt. I will in the future be going to Long & McQuade for any adjustments and service. They have always been great and the customer service has been amazing. I will now only go there as I have learned my lesson. I'll be willing to give The Rock Shop a chance if management changes in the future, but for now, it's a no from me.
