Such a unique and cozy place!! Price of the room was a little steeper than I would expect of a private bedroom with shared washrooms, but the place was well maintained and made for a comfortable night’s sleep! The staff at reception were also incredibly kind and helpful when checking in/out.nnI didn’t get an opportunity to check out the live jazz show, but I’ve heard fantastic things! I did stop in the bar for breakfast, and the staff there were fantastic as well! I’m blind and travel with a cane, and they immediately offered to guide me over to a table. I got their avocado toast which, honestly, was very reasonably priced given toronto’s pricey standard and the quality and presentation of the food! Also got to enjoy a little bit of jazz music playing over the speakers while eating.nnOverall a very pleasant experience, and a fun little adventure if it’s within your means! Will absolutely be stopping by the bar again on my next visit to the city.
Writing a review based on my experience Sunday July 5 in the afternoon. This was my first time in The Rex and I was really looking forward to it. It was a sunny, hot afternoon and I was visiting from out of town. Upon arrival I was greeted at the door by a very friendly waitress in a skirt. She said that the music was starting shortly and I was welcomed to find a spot anywhere. I made myself comfortable at the bar. I must’ve arrived in between sets which was perfect because I was able to get the lay of the land. The patrons ranged from younger to older but all gave off a very welcoming and respectful aura. The wait staff was also very friendly. I got to chatting with the bartender who was extremely talented and personable. I believe his name is Evan. At first I ordered a LARGE glass of water and a cider. He really took the LARGE glass of water seriously as if was a two-handed stein lol. Anyways, after enjoying those drinks I watched him smoke a few cocktails which i was quite impressed and didn’t really think that this establishment would do something like that no shade … needless to say I had a few smoked old fashioneds while enjoying the live music. this was the end of my 3 day trip in Toronto and was the HIGHLIGHT of it all. I definitely will be back.
Its the only place in Toronto I like being. Such a cozy inviting place to be. The bar tenders always treat you like a friend, the music is always great, the food is good. My wife and I stayed in the hotel rooms like 15 years ago before we got married. The rooms are old and nothing special...and yet they are something special. The building, the history. All of it is awesome. Go, have some drinks and food and enjoy the music, just forget about the BS outside for a while.
It's ok. I booked a bed with a private bathroom and it was ok. The bed itself wasn't great. Old style mattress with springs. Not sure if it was supposed to be a queen but it felt small for sure. The room had a sink and ac machine in the window which did the job well. The bathroom looked and felt like it was added recently and it showed. Modern and nice. I have taken price into consideration but there are a few things that need to be included regardless of price: for starters, no shampoo in the bathroom which wasnt ideal. Soap was provided, however there were no small face clothes either. Something to wash with. Only medium sized and large towels. The hot water also took a surprising long time to come to the shower. At least 3 minutes.nnNow some good, the location is great and the price is decent if you are willing to overlook some of the issues above. There is a restaurant below that plays music all the time and I was there for a jazz night which was fantastic.
I ended up visiting the Rex 3 times during a week trip to Toronto. A smashing venue for Jazz with 3 shows a day when I was there. Atmosphere was engaging with the old fashioned pub style adding to it for me.nVery friendly bar staff too.nTicket prices, when you have them, are very reasonable.nIf you like Jazz, don’t miss it!
