There was a long line on a Saturday afternoon but it's mostly because they only have one window open for taking orders. They accept credit cards. I got the swirl soft-serve with peanut butter dipping and chocolate dipping. You have to be patient for the shell to harden. I like the chocolate flavor better than the vanilla flavor but neither of them are significantly more delicious than other places offering soft serve. I'd say it'll be a place to visit if it's in your neighborhood but probably not worth driving here on purpose.
The sweets are great, but the food is meh. Friend and I dropped in here mostly to grab a freeze, but we also got a burger to hold us over until dinner. Burger was as impressive as a Burger King. The freeze was delicious though, can hit just right on a hot day. When looking at all the other treats people were getting, you can tell this place gets ice cream right.
I love it for quick and inexpensive Ice cream. My usual is the almond delite with chocolate ice cream instead of vanilla. I also love the onion rings
It's so cool no pun intended...or was it? to have a retro spot like this in the heart of Logan Square. You wonder just how many old school places like this in cities exist anymore: Ted Drewes in St Louis, Leon's in Milwaukee, maybe just a scant few more. Is the ice cream as good as those aforementioned legendary spots? No, not really even close, though I do appreciate it being 97% fat free. But, you can get your gourmet, $8 a cup ice cream at many other places in this city, and many of them are well worth the price. You're here for a feeling, a little slice of what it might have been like to pull up to one of these while driving down Route 66 or being 10 years old and riding your bike with $3 in your pocket, just enough to enjoy a twist cone with sprinkles. A perfect way to cap any night of the summer!
I had some very delicious onion rings, a veggie dog, and a wonderful “dirt and worms” sundae. They have such a huge menu! Yum!
Best place for soft served ice cream! Theres usually a line but it goes quick. Highly recommend.
I always go here as a Logan Square resident. It’s a classic in the summer. My trip was not so pleasant this one evening. I ordered a coke and slushie. I paid and waited for my name to get called. It did and go and realize the cashier wrote two cones. I was not mad but just said oh I only wanted one. the girls who were making the ice cream told the cashier all she said was I HEARD WHAT I HEARD very rudely. I haven’t even asked for a refund but was totally just thrown off by her. I wasn’t upset my order was wrong I just didn’t need the cone. What is a cone? $2. I didn’t need the money. I just didn’t even know what to reply and walked away. wasn’t handled politely. Please train your staff to be polite to customers. Especially ones who support a local business instead of Jeni’s.
Frozen Custard delights of your own making if so desired. Great street food. Deep fried polish sausage. Can't remember everything else. Summer is for places like this. Some parking is available. Lots of outdoor seating. Open late. Stop by.
With Logan Square's change from being a rather rough hispanic area to hipster centric businesses everywhere that overcharge for terrible quality, false "gourmet" food it's rare to see something like this. Tastee Freez tries valiantly to keep that cheap, dive, type of atmosphere that was you and your friends' go to place as kids. Truth be known to all, it still works! From banana splits to the good ol' burger and fries, everything is not only super cheap, but of great quality as well. I try to come here every once in awhile. The only thing that keeps me from going more is they don't have any fish, chicken, etc. Walking into the very small store, you'll see the regular menus, then they have stuff the store made up in chalk/marker on the walls. Since Tastee Freez is a franchise, everything on the regular menu is good, but the stuff the individual stores have made up themselves could use some work. You order at one window then pick it up at another or they just bring it to you, depends on how much they like you. There's picnic tables set up outside, but the small, quaint inside only has bar stools set up around the windows. This isn't much my style so usually I just order to go and head home. During my visit this time I decided to try out an actual Tastee Freez specialty, the soft serve!...in Chicago's current 25 degrees rainy weather. While I was trying something new I picked up a half slab of ribs and a Tastee Burger. If you're going to eat here, like I said before stick with the regular menu or any common food you see. Last time I ordered something I know people don't order which is the bleu cheese burger. The cheese tasted awful and chalky since it's most likely been there for awhile and they never threw it out. My order took about 15 minutes to make this time around because of the ribs. While I was waiting I took part in devouring my Oreo Tastee Freez. It looked fantastic, but when I tried it out I was instantly disappointed. The soft serve is nowhere near sweet as normal ice cream or they used some lame artificial sweetener, leaving something to be desired. Alright I'm home! Time to chow down. Opening up my little box, the ribs looked fantastic on a small bed of fries. They were nice and tender albeit not fall off the bone tender, but a couple notches below. BBQ sauce was lacking in taste and they didn't put nearly enough on it to be really considered BBQ which shocks me considering the atmosphere the Tastee Freez goes for, you'd think they'd try to drench it in sauce. You can tell they don't marinade the meat, but the regular taste is very good and makes it seem homemade. Also, where else can you get a half slab of ribs, fries and a drink for 8 bucks? Alright ribs were good, up next is the a good ol' fashion burger. 2.99 for a fresh burger was a delight and it was pretty big. It included lettuce, tomato, onions, and a bit of ketchup on a perfect sesame seed bun. They even included fries which for 2.99 is awesome! Everything went down great, the burger was perfection. Seriously, I've paid $16-$25 for the pretty much same meal in a "gourmet" restaurant and this was better. Not only do you save a lot of money at Tastee Freez, but it harkens back to your childhood and is great for your kids as well. They make huge ice cream cone swirls that you can get dipped in several flavors. I'd recommend everyone to make them part of your life.
When it's a hot day as the summer comes to an end and your 5-year-old says casually, "You know what would be nice right now? A chocolate-vanilla twist ice cream cone..." The Freeze is the place you take them! With nostalgia for visits to the unfussy, "what you see is what you get" kind of walk-up ice cream place of my childhood, it just hits the spot! In terms of value for the price, as we overheard someone else exclaim while sitting at one of the picnic tables outside, "When they say large, they MEAN large!" With cones, sundaes, shakes, slushees, and freezees blended soft serve with cookies or candies along with the usual grill fare, you've got lots of choices to make. Don't worry, whatever decision you make will be delicious!
