The Coastal Cafe

Story

WHO WE ARE: We are a relaxed, easy going North End neighbourhood cafe. We are honest, and our mission is to provide the best food and coffee without any bullshit. We are a little rough around the edges, and learning as we go, but we are learning and with that comes better product and service.

HOW WE DO WHAT WE DO: Often by the seat of our pants, almost everything prepped from scratch using personally selected ingredients and prepared in small batches. Nova Scotian products are used where the option is available as much as seasonally or economically possible. We operate on a first come, first served basis, and don't take reservations. If the cafe isn't busy, claim your table before ordering. If you see we're full check with staff to see how a long a wait it will be. Often people come in, see we're full and leave, only to have a table open up within seconds. A little patience and you will be rewarded with a lovely plate of food worth waiting for.

WHAT WE DO: We are a counter service fully licensed cafe redefining breakfast/brunch and offering high quality takes on lunch. We do take-out. Call ahead and we can have it ready for you.

WHEN WE DO WHAT WE DO: The Coastal is open 7 days a week. 9am to no later than 2pm everyday.

WHERE WE DO IT 2731: Robie St., North End Halifax, between North and Almon Streets, next to the Bloomfield Centre.

WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO: You can get a plate of eggs, bacon, hash, and toast anywhere. But where, my friends, can you get lamb meatballs on top of scrambled eggs with asiago and herbs? Our philosophy is that cheap is easy, value is a challenge. A lot of time and expense go into our dishes to ensure we are exceeding expectations. So while we may not be dirt cheap, we do provide extremely high quality cooking at very reasonable prices.

Seriously, one the best breakfasts I've ever had. Definitely, the best one I've had in Nova Scotia and PEI. I thought we should have breakfast here everyday while we're visiting, but they don't open early enough! I also really appreciate the wide selection of condiments offered, especially the hot sauces galore! Get the Blueberry jam and the bacon. Dip the bacon in it. You're welcome. Blueberry glazed bacon should be on the menu.

My absolute favorite brunch location in Halifax. This is a popular place, so it can be difficult to find parking or even get a seat. Wheelchair and stroller accessible but there is limited space once inside. Order and pay first, then find a table afterwards. A very interesting menu with unusual and creative breakfast options that change throughout the year. Always worth going back to try something on the newest menu. I definitely recommend a visit to this restaurant.

Big winner, been around enough and tasted many delicious things, but when it comes to breakfast folks, if you don't try here you are losing out. My advice is get there early so your comfortable, make sure if your a spice fan that you enjoy the delicious buffalo habanero sandwich. It is not what you think and it is to die for. Cappuccino is good as well. Enjoy!

Quaint place with friendly servers and tasty food. I had one of their GIANT mugs of coffee and the Elvis without the bacon. They make things vegetarian and DISCOUNT for you! Outwardly accommodating for other dietary restrictions too. Very delicious, not too expensive and they have multiple kinds of non-dairy milks to offer which I appreciate very much in a breakfast place!

Pros: good food Cons: busy, long waits, paying before dining It's small, but despite this runs a crowd of usually 12+ people. When I arrived there was standing room only. The food is tasty but expensive for what they offer- $15 and up per person with breakfast food. the menu often highlights fancy-sounding ingredients to make it seem more creative. Due to the crowd, my partner and I waited more than half an hour to eat while less than a foot from the tables to our left and right. Noise of other diners is an issue.
