Story

The history of agriculture in Nova Scotia is important to all of us here at Lion & Bright. It's a history based on small communities of neighbours helping neighbours, managing prosperity through innovation and the strength of our communities.

Crucial to this history is the use of oxen for clearing land and tilling soil. For Nova Scotia's farmers, oxen were reliable, economical animals that could pull impressive weight, and were ideal for breaking sod and ploughing the province's wet, heavy soil. They worked most efficiently in pairs and were raised and trained side by side. Pairs of oxen were commonly given the names Lion and Bright - Lion on the left, Bright on the right.

For Lion & Bright, we set out to create a space for our community to visit day or night -- to read, or work, or relax, and be among friends. Our cafe and bar expresses the two-hearted nature of these teams of oxen, and it's in the spirit of these great, humble animals that we welcome you to Lion & Bright, to enjoy the company of your neighbours and the products of our community.

Lion is the libation bar. When you imbibe at Lion, you get courage - you become more honest and more bold and perhaps more jovial. The craft of beer, wine and spirits is celebrated here. Choose from craft cocktails, hand picked vinos from around the world, Nova Scotian craft beers on draft & a smattering of craft beers by the bottle from NS, NB, QC & ON. All with the spirit of provenance.

Bright is the barista bar. When you imbibe at Bright, you get brilliance - you become more focused, more alert, and more awake when you savour fine coffees that still have provenance and that have still been touched by human hands every step of the way; growing, harvesting, processing, trading, sourcing & roasting, extracting & merchandising all while telling the tale of it's journey. Same with teas, chocolates, and of course the food.

Both bars and their accompanying foods will be changing with the seasons and will all be focused on being good. The use of chalkboards for very nimble things & reprinted menus with staple sections of less choices within each category but with only good options none the less.

The ability to collaborate and showcase growers, brewers, guest barmen/women, host live shows, and overall gather people to enjoy themselves is the goal. The prices will aim to be approachable and give the average person the ability to repeat their experiences more often than not. Approachable, open, warm, humble, convivial & jovial.

My neighbourhood bar - I enjoy spending time with friends or on my own at the bar. The atmosphere changes constantly whether its the art on the walls, special events, coffee/work station time that morphs into a dance party at night. The tacos are my favourite menu item and the constant changing beer taps makes this place different each visit. The team is friendly and Sean knows how to run a strong business.

Updated review: Lion and Bright used to be one of my favorite places in Halifax. Great local beer selection, good and creative food from local ingredients and a really nice vibe. I'd often go towards the end of the day and get some work done, and then meet friends. The service has always been hit and miss, but it's gone seriously down hill. I don't think it's the fault of the servers. They now have this asinine policy of no laptops after 5:00. Foursquare tells me I've been there 100+ times. Every time I go now, I regret it. I don't know what caused these changes, but they're not welcome to this former regular. Want good service, great local beer, fantastic food, good happy hour? Go next door to the Agricola Street Brasserie. My former review: A coffee shop/bar hybrid. One of the best craft beer selections in town, with an interesting and eclectic menu made from local ingredients. I often think they're understaffed, so service is hit and miss.

I can't believe I waited so long to eat here! Trendy yet cost and welcoming, patrons come here to work, meet friends and colleagues, and to dine on deliciously prepared items. Don't miss out eating here when in Halifax. I recommend the tacos, bean fries, the chicken bites... Everything in the menu, honestly.

Love the aura and vibe of Lion and Bright. Great local craft beer selection. Great food. It's even a good place to get some writing/laptop work done if you need.

Food was great. We had the weekend tasting menu and tried everything on it. (6 small portions for approx $30). Gumbo and cornbread were highlights. Tried some of the local beers on tap that we also enjoyed. Service was okay. We wanted to order more drinks but didn't get the chance, and waited quite a long time for some of our food to arrive.
