The Back 40 Grill

Saw this restaurant as we were driving by, and the words "homestyle cooking" caught our eye so we decided to turn around and give it a try! So glad we did! It seemed like a locals favourite place as it was quite busy. Very attentive waiter. Excellent service. Food was delicious and generous portions. Prices comparable to other places. I had the "Here Piggy" burger pictured, and my friend took the challenge and had "The Back 40 burger". Both were delicious! The fries were also really good, and the gravy was delicious! Highly recommend!

Have a wonder night out with my daughters. Our burgers were delicious. My 5 month old became very fussy as she usually does in the evenings and the owner offered to hold her while I finished my meal. Best service and friendly staff.

The chicken burger was good. Service was good. It reminds me of an old pub with little charm and not much else to offer. The prices were more than I expected but the taste was good.

Enjoyed our meal and glad we selected this place after hearing about new ownership. Parksville is especially hard to find any options on Sun/Mon or after 7pm. Menu has a decent selection for a well-priced bar/grill. We had the fish and swapped up for poutine. Everything was great. The coleslaw was outstanding. The fish had a light, crispy crust and the meat fluffy, buttery and tender. Tartar sauce was nice flavour but my preference would add diced capers to it. The poutine was excellent, however I think fresh cut fries might be better than the cavendish/Costco ones—still delicious tho. Service was exceptionally friendly and fast…and hope that doesn’t change when they start hiring servers. Pricing was great for the quality of food and service. Recommend this place, especially those late nights or Sundays when you can’t find anything else open!!

Arrived on the island and wanted to try some fish and chips! I ordered halibut and my husband cod and it was delicious! The batter was crispy and thin and the fish so fresh tasting and flaky! The chips and coleslaw were a great addition. I also ordered a side garden salad that was very fresh and generous. The staff were very friendly and family orientated. And to finish it off the take out containers were bio-degradable! I highly recommend!

Four of us sat down for a late lunch. Brand new owners and let me tell you, what a joy to eat there. Shawn and his business partner are running a great place. They're open until 10pm, good selection of alcohol, great Caesars, and the fish and chips is amazing, especially the coleslaw. Could not recommend this place enough! Was such a pleasure spending time talking to Shawn and eating some great food. Will definitely be back!

We decided to check out this place after driving by many times. Service - great. Very friendly, attentive. The owner I think? was great. Wine and food came quickly. Food - we split the dry ribs for an appetizer and split the 2-piece halibut with fries for dinner. Quality of dry ribs was good for 1-2 people but honestly not that great, nothing special. The sauce that came with it was too thin and so didn’t make a big difference to taste. The fish was not good. Hardly any fish, the batter was too oily. The fries were really good though! Atmosphere - too many lights. Too bright so not cozy. No music at all or any sound. It made us talk quietly in whispers, it was odd. Lots of TVs with hockey games on which is nice. But no sound. Tables are covered in thick’s clear plastic. Just a kind of sterile atmosphere. I think if they changed the ambience, added some background sound, took the plastic off the tables, turned the harsh lights down, and moved around the tables into a more intimate setting, I think it would be a lot more welcoming.

We went in for lunch today with the kids and had a good time. The food is delicious and the service was great. We would definitely come back! The fish and chips were super fresh and the bruschetta was incredibly tasty and huge portions too.

Had the pleasure of dining and visiting with Shaun and Raymond the owners of this pleasant little diner/grill in the beautiful city of Parksville by the Ocean! The burgers and fish and chips were of high quality, well seasoned and lovingly prepared. These two really appreciate their customers and care about what they are putting on their plates. One of the toughest things to find while dining in Oceanside. Try them out and TELL YOUR FRIENDS!

We had a fabulous lunch here today for the first time. We were also joined by two dear friends of ours. We thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of this restaurant and our four meals. Two fish and chips orders, seafood chowder, and a Chicken BLT. They were all delicious. The portions were superb too. We felt warmly welcomed from the moment we walked in the door too. We will return again without hesitation. Highly recommended.
