Such a fun experience! It was easy to make a reservation and the tea room is very pretty. Even though it was really busy and quite noisy there was live piano music that made the experience even better. We had a wonderful server who explained things really well and was really helpful and quick. The food tasted amazing! The scones were so good and the sandwiches looked perfect. I would recommend this experience and the delicious food. It's a bit expensive but the b food quality is worth it. Remember the dress code.
I grew up in Victoria, which has a rich foodie culture enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. This was certainly no exception, although strictly speaking, more of an experience than simply a meal. The food was great - the ingredients were super fresh, the flavours were clean and balanced, and the presentation was wonderful. Everything looked and tasted great. The tea itself was also of course, superb. But the stand-out part of this meal was definitely the ambiance and the service. You're not paying for the food and drink, you're paying to be transported into an imaginative and idyllic experience of aristocracy and culture from a bygone era. It's something quite different and may not be for everyone especially at this price point! - I must admit I had the lovely blessing of being treated by a good friend, and this is certainly not something I would indulge in or recommend to others lightly. But if you yearn for the picturesque and romantic traditions of old Europe and lets be honest, have a fair bit of disposable income then this is an experience is worth trying!
If you're in Victoria, you really cannot miss the afternoon tea at the Empress, its definitely more formal and traditional than other locations but not to be missed. The tea room has a great view overlooking the harbor and always features a live pianist playing oddly classic pop music. The check-in stand is at the far end of the tea room away from the hotel restaurant and closer to the hotel shops. Service is exceptional as to be expected and you'll be able to select whatever tea you prefer from the uniquely present menu, with suggestions for children if they're interested. Children also get their own special menu. The tea and food were excellent and the atmosphere very relaxed. Note, dress code is pretty relaxed as I saw everything from t-shirts to more formal dress and some really formally dressed tables. You can of course purchase any of the tea or bone china cups from the gift shop right outside the tea room.
The service is great. You get to pick your choice of tea out of their collection. Food was up and down, I enjoyed the sandwiches, but the deserts were not matching my expectations. They look pretty appealing, but lack of moistness, flavour and textures. For a $100+p.p. Tax tip includedafternoon tea, I would expect more. Recommend for first timers for the location & experience.
I have always wanted to do a proper tea and The Empress delivered an experience I will cherish. Four of us had four pots of tea we shared. Two of is were coffee drinkers and were shocked we liked them all. The food was incredible. Apparently the scones I have had throughout my life were cheap knock offs. It is pricey, but we all felt worth it. Dietary restrictions: They offered a nut free tray that appeared to be every bit as amazing as those with nuts.
Our Server Marlene was Exceptional! I could tell how busy she was and she didn’t show it at all and took her time with us to explain everything so we could have the best possible experience. The ambiance and food was delightful and the food and beverage Manager Yogesh was extremely friendly and recommended local places to visit and experience. I will definitely be back with my girlfriends for another wonderful experience. This is a must if you are visiting Victoria. Be prepared it is pricey but worth it for this world famous experience. Make reservations ahead of time online! For 2 people, you get to choose 2 teas and share one 3-tier tray of food. It was a good amount of food, we couldn’t finish it so we took some to go at the end. The tea room is stunning with views of the harbour. Some guests dressed up and wore tea party hats, so fun!
Service is fantastic, the tea's themselves are exquisite and decadent but we found the sandwiches a bit lackluster. The quantity is also a bit on the low side for the price *89 per person* if the quality of the sandwiches were better and the ingredients more higher end, then i would say its worth the money. Overall its worth it for the atmosphere and the scenery but food is not on par.
This is supposedly the best high tea place in North America so we were excited to try it out. The variety of tea options was ok as well as the qualiy of it. The food served was not particularly impressive. We stayed at the gold suite so we had the access to the gold lounge during Christmas. A lot of food, including scone, sweats, and sandwiches, was the same as what they served at the gold lounge. I am not sure if they always serve them or it was a special occasion due to Christmas. I didn't feel like it was certainly $185 worth for two people. Nonetheless, the tea was good. Service was great. The view of the harbor through the windows was beautiful. Something you can try but you should know you are paying a lot of money for the experience, not for the food or tea you are getting.
The experience, ambiance and food are completely worth it. The selection of teas is quite extensive. They were able to take our dietary restrictions of no pork and seafood into account and tailor the food to us. The scones, sandwiches and desserts are delicious. Dietary restrictions: They were able to accommodate no pork and seafood. They removed any pork sandwiches and where possible made the desserts with gelatin substitutes.
