If you’re planning a movie night at Scotiabank Theatre Chinook, here’s the honest breakdown.nn This is widely considered the main flagship Cineplex in Calgarynn* Located inside Chinook Centren* Has IMAX, UltraAVX, and multiple large auditoriumsn* Known for the largest screens in the city especially IMAXn* Feels like the most premium + big-scale Cineplex experiencennThe theatre’s last major refresh/rebranding era was around 2007–2008, and while it still holds up as a flagship location, you can definitely feel that it’s not the newest or most modern Cineplex in Calgary anymore. Some areas feel slightly dated compared to newer theatres in the city.nnThat said, the IMAX experience is still a strong highlight—the screen is massive, sound is powerful, and it’s easily one of the best places in Calgary for a true blockbuster feel.nnSeating-wise, don’t expect full recliner seats in IMAX. The seats are standard style, not luxury recliners, but they’re still reasonably comfortable for the duration of a movie.nnOne downside is cleanliness, which can be inconsistent in certain areas depending on foot traffic and timing. It’s not a dealbreaker, but it is noticeable at times.nnOverall:nIt’s not the newest or most polished Cineplex anymore, but it still delivers a classic big-screen, flagship IMAX experience that keeps it relevant. If you want luxury recliners, newer theatres are better—but for sheer screen impact and “cinema feel,” Chinook still stands strong.
Worst theater in Calgary hands down. Canyon Meadows is better because at least it’s cheap. There is no way this theater should be priced on par with other cineplex theaters around. Horrible rickety broken old theatre seats. No recline. They rock so you can’t get comfortable. The seating is cramped. Squeaking seats so if you shift at all during the 2.5 hrs you will be squeaking non-stop. No AC. Only half of the speakers worked in our theatre, so the sound only came from the left side. The volume was extremely low.nnThe entire theater is run-down and dirty. I don’t think it has had maintenance since the 90s. The floor is sticky, littered, and peeling. Mysterious drip stains all over the washroom doors. Escalator broken. All in all a very bad experience. I recommend you go to any other theater in Calgary, or even better rent from home and enjoy the comfort of your own home.
I recently visited this cinema and overall had a good experience. The picture quality and sound system were excellent, and the staff was polite and well-organized. The environment was clean, and everything else met my expectations.nnHowever, the seats were quite uncomfortable, which made it difficult to fully enjoy the movie, especially for a longer duration. I hope the management considers upgrading the seating, as it would greatly improve the overall experience.nnApart from that, everything else was really good.
Came here a couple of weeks ago with my usual crew for a Friday night movie and honestly the VIP experience completely sold us. The recliner seats are ridiculously comfortable and the in-seat food service made the whole evening feel way more indulgent than a typical cinema night out. We ordered the loaded nachos and they were actually decent, which I was not expecting at all from a movie theatre kitchen. Will definitely be making this our go-to spot for any future group outings because the combination of good food and that cozy atmosphere is hard to beat.
This theatre used to be a lot more popular and well maintained. It's a shame to see it go so down hill. The arcade just seems squished in and rushed. The seats are outdated and are uncomfortable compared to other theaters like sunridge spectrum or east hills. The staff are very friendly but are not the most professional they are constantly on their phones, but at the same time I don't blame them there's almost nothing to do.
