UltraAVX ruined Avatar IIInnI watched Avatar III last night at the ScreenX / UltraAVX auditorium in Scotiabank Theatre Chinook, and the experience was a little bit disappointing.nnAs the film that essentially defined modern 3D cinema, Avatar must be experienced in 3D. However, despite this being advertised as a premium ScreenX / UltraAVX auditorium — and despite the fact that the theatre is equipped with dual-projection hardware — the movie was played in 2D.nnWhat makes this worse is that ScreenX tickets are CAD $2 more expensive than IMAX at this location, yet the actual visual experience was far inferior. If the screening was clearly marked as 2D on the ticketing page, I must have missed it — but if I had known in advance, I absolutely would not have chosen this auditorium for Avatar III.nnOn top of that, the image clarity was underwhelming. It did not appear to be true 4K projection, looking closer to 2K or at best 2.5K. For a visually demanding film like Avatar, this significantly detracts from immersion and overall impact.nnFor a theatre that brands itself as a flagship premium venue, this was a deeply underwhelming presentation of a film that deserves the very best technical conditions.nnI wouldn’t call this auditorium unqualified in general. Its presentation may be better suited to dialogue-driven or atmospheric films, where tone, framing, and narrative matter more than sheer visual scale — a Woody Allen film, or even a classic by Akira Kurosawa, could potentially play well in this space.nnHowever, Avatar III is a large-scale, effects-driven cinematic experience where 3D presentation, brightness, resolution, and immersion are essential rather than optional. In that context, this ScreenX / UltraAVX auditorium simply does not match the technical and experiential demands of the film.
This theatre used to be a lot more popular and well maintained. It's a shame to see it go so down hill. The arcade just seems squished in and rushed. The seats are outdated and are uncomfortable compared to other theaters like sunridge spectrum or east hills. The staff are very friendly but are not the most professional they are constantly on their phones, but at the same time I don't blame them there's almost nothing to do.
Very poor experience. I was seated in seat F4 in theater room 14, and there was some kind of wall or structure in front that blocked part of the screen, so the full screen was not visible, which completely ruined the movie experience. Seats like this should not be sold, or at the very least customers should be clearly warned in advance, as the theater really needs to fix or improve this.
Came here on a Tuesday 10::00 not busy at all theatre and it is gross had to stand outside and wait for it to be cleaned will not be going there again popcorn everywhere looks like it haven’t been cleaned in 2 years. Those are only photos in our small area manager was good when I told her but shouldn’t have to wait outside the theatre 5 mins to movie.
Really poor service yesterday on a Tuesday night. Took about 25 minutes to get to the front of cashier when the line was only about 10 deep. I asked the cashier if they had any hot dogs, she went to check, and never came back. I saw her starting to work at another till. I saw her ring through at least two customers before I was able to find someone else to help us. He was a bit confused and slow. Eventually I got my items 10 mins for 3 things! but could not use my gift cards. I eventually gave up to use the gift cards. He said it happens sometimes with gift cards.nOver 35 minutes to get my hot dog, popcorn and pop. And it wasn't very good. Almost missed the start of the movie.nAt least the theater was mostly clean.nI don't think AVX is worth the extra money though.
