School of Raq

Everyone is super nice, but not a great place if you're an absolute beginner. The most beginner class they have is called fundamentals and is "open level" meaning the majority of students have taken it or even higher level courses multiple times. I've never done any kind of dancing before but was assured this was the right level for me. We started working on things like choreography within 2 or 3 sessions despite the fact myself and the 1 or 2 other real beginners were still really struggling with the absolute basics that were briefly covered in the first session. Realizing it was geared more towards the established/experienced students I asked if it was possible for a refund but unfortunately they don't offer any so I just had to stop going as every session past the first was just a frustration. I don't recommend if you've never done dancing before unless you like being thrown in the deep end with little support or if they ever offer a class which is JUST beginners. Again, I don't want to sound too harsh, the instructor was very kind, but in a class of 12 or so there were only 1 or 2 absolute dance beginners such as myself so I totally understand why the instructor focused the class on the needs of the majority of students. Good class I think, just NOT for beginners.

I have been belly dancing at School of Raq since 2012 and have loved every moment of it. The community is a very welcoming and supportive family. Since 2012 as a new beginner, belly dancing has become an important part of my life. I have taken classes with a number of teachers at School of Raq and have learned a lot from all. The studio and store are small but wonderful.
