Set in an array of Victorian rowhouses, Sassafraz has evolved through the decades to become a magical space in the heart of historic Yorkville. Located at the corner of Bellair and Cumberland, the little yellow house has “seen it all” from the early hippie movement of the 60’s to the lack of movement that comes from too much Bordeaux. Sassafraz offers an exceptional menu serving market-driven, French-inspired Canadian cuisine.

A staple of the Yorkville are, Sassafraz is a high end restaurant and as such one would expect impeccable food and service in an exceptional ambiance. Sadly, one of these elements was missing during a recent dining experience. The waiter, Michael, had attitude from the start. He was abrupt, ignoring our request, and simply due. We were shocked and tried to make light of this experience. Fortunately as the dinner progressed he softened his attitude and rose to the level of the establishment he was representing. The menu could be smaller with choices as it was confusing. The meat platter for $24 dollars was feather skimps in the quantity of items on the board. The mussels were excellent as was the bread served with butter superb crust and flavour. The tenderloins was very good. I suggest they offer the option of a larger portion than just a 6oz one. I found the 60z too small for me. The cod was also very good as was the vegetarian eggplant dish. A simple ice cream dessert was all that was needed to round off a good meal and I had the pistachios which tasted of real pistachio and not some pistachio flavour. Its a pricey restaurant with dinner for four with drinks and tip topped into the $500+ range.
Overall great dining experience. I took my mom out for dinner here and we both enjoyed the food, service and overall atmosphere. We ordered to share the duck pate, Atlantic salmon, Quebec wild boar, and strawberry cheesecake. The salmon tasted so fresh and by far my favourite dish, followed closely by the cheesecake. I felt like the pate had a slight metallic after taste, and the boar was a little fatty for my liking. Subjective to my taste buds though because my mom loved everything! Will be back and eager to try out the different dishes.
The ambiance in this restaurant is just lovely. My daughter and I had dinner here a couple of nights ago. Starting with some sparkling - wish there had been a few other choices for this. Dinner started with oysters which were perfectly great, followed by the Ontario beef tartare - yummy! Main was the lamb and just fantastic! We did split the main, so when looking at the pictures, note that it was split already for us. Loved the fact that they did this. So the food was AWESOME! Our waiter was very good to begin things and then had a larger table come in and we became non-existent, with not even dessert or coffee being offered. Finally a different waitress came and as she had no idea either where we were in the food aspect of things, just asked us if we wanted our bill. At this point, what else could we do, pay the bill and leave. I did cut the tip a little short 15% only, and to be honest, in thinking about it now, I should have cut it even less to simply make a point. Service can make or break a dining experience which is really too bad. The food being really good might be enough for us to return, although I cannot say that we will for sure.
Thoroughly mediocre dining experience. We were told that the brunch menu was not available at 11 am on a Saturday. Apparently they would have made an exception if we really wanted but confusing why they would not be serving brunch as standard at that time. The wellness bowl was quite bland. The ingredients seemed fresh but not enough seasoning to make it taste anything more than eating raw vegetables with plain rice. Service was overly attentive but then absent minded. Overall not great. Vegetarian options: Token vegetarian options
Great place for nightlife with best friends and family. Nice and fresh food, served fast and employees are very friendly. Location is perfectly set in the corner of street, we have the best view of the night. Happy hour and very enjoyed our stay in this place. Definitely will come back, recommend to everyone!
The ambiance was amazing but our service was not the greatest. I kept stacking up my plates for the servers to take but they weren't clearing the tables and wouldn't check on us as much as you'd expect at a nice restaurant. The mac and cheese was surprisingly delicious and the steak was decent, nothing special but the collard greens and mushrooms were amazing. I'd go again for the ambiance alone :
Nestled in Yorkville this restaurant hits all the right notes for a place to go on a nice date. The service was prompt and friendly and the decor was very well done with a nice sophisticated atmosphere to it. The food was delicious and well portioned. I totally recommend the duck pate. It is rich and delicious. But get the french baguette on the side as well as the crisps they provide for the pate aren't enough and you'll need a little bread after to finish up the pate.
We had a nice experience at Sassafraz. Excellent service, good sized portions and a beautiful dining room. I really enjoyed the seared tuna salad and the steak tartar was also delicious. There’s a great patio if you prefer to enjoy the fresh air and people watching.
Amazing location and super awesome service! The manager, Ricky was phenomenal. He gave us a table to enjoy a drink while the kitchen was catching up with their full house. Vinay provided a great service too!
Service was amazing, called in to let them know we were going to be late and they had accommodated with a new time. Servers were also attentive to orders. Ordered the Wellington County Beef Tenderloin 6oz and Canadian Atlantic Salmon which both were cooked to perfection! Steak was medium rare as requested and salmon tasted just as lovely. Dessert - flourless cake wasn’t the best but it tasted better with the side of ice cream that comes with it, a little too sweet for our liking, although would highly recommend this restaurant for any type of setting to dine in!
