Hidden small gem. Food is nicely portioned, affordable prices, I like that they use real chicken, not sliced cardboard tasting like other places . Simple and authentic seasoning. Definitely one of the best Vietnamese stops in the downtown core. I ordered the vermicelli satay chicken, very pleased. Wish it came with some fish sauce on the side, will ask next time.
Visited for lunch around 1PM on a Monday and was immediately seated. Ordered the pho special regular size. Order came in within 10 minutes of ordering. The bowl was massive! They gave a lot of noodles and meat for a regular sized bowl. I would say it’s equivalent to some places large bowls. The soup was light, not overly salty but also not as flavourful as other places. The meat, although a lot, had quite a few tough pieces. The brisket was cut thick which gave into the toughness. The rare flank was tender. The tripe was crunchy and the beef balls were okay. There are daily lunch specials which was $15 for a noodle, salad roll and pop but it is a specific noodle dish. Overall a great place for a quick bite to eat that is filling and enjoyable!
Broth - 4/5 Noodles - 3/5 Beef - 3/5 Had a pleasant experience at Pho City, the prices and portions were very good. The broth was quite good as well, but the noodles were overcooked and fell apart too easily. The beef was also a but chewy but overall a pleasant experience at Pho City.
Didn’t know where to go only knew we were downtown and wanted Pho. Reviews looked good for a couple places but we walked past Pho City and decided to check it out. Food amazing!! The flavours and fresh ingredients had all four of us unable to talk about anything except how awesome our food was! Portions and value were excellent as well and finally the service couldn’t have been any better! Thanks so much
Everything is fantastic! The beef is amazing and the chicken is perfectly cooked. The spring rolls are incredible as well! Don’t mess around, just get the Ultimate Bowl!! Oh and staff are super friendly!
We went to Pho City specifically to try the peanut sate pho, since we had heard many good things about it. The restaurant itself is clean, bright and newly renovated - a huge step up from the condition of the restaurant that was located there previously! It is conveniently situated in central Calgary on the edge of Chinatown, right next to the river. There is a paid parking lot just a block away which gives easy access to the restaurant. The menu has lots of great options, and a gluten free selection. We opted for a large bowl of the special noodle soup 40 as well as the beef and beef ball noodle soup 42, both with peanut sate added. We also got an order of the pork spring rolls A1. The spring rolls arrived very quickly, and were piping hot, fresh and crispy. The filling was good it was a fairly standard flavour in terms of pork spring rolls, with a decent ratio of filling to wrapper. The bowls of pho also arrived very quickly and were piping hot. The large was massive, and the regular was also a very generous size. We both agreed that the slices of beef were the most tender we had ever had in a bowl of pho - and we have been to a LOT of pho houses! The beef balls were fairly small, but tasted decent - again, a fairly standard flavour comparable to many other places. There was a generous portion of both meat and noodles in both bowls. The noodles were also cooked well and not overdone. The peanut sate itself was very tasty and already fairly spicy, with some nice chunks of peanuts in it. I found I didn't have to add too much sriracha to get it to my preferred spice level. The reason why I have rated the restaurant a "4" was the the broth itself was a bit disappointing. Although the peanut sate itself was tasty, we agreed the broth was just missing "something". I found it didn't have the usual dimension of flavour that I am accustomed to at my usual pho spots. Typically, with peanut sate pho, the broth is richer and almost "thick", however this broth had a bit of a watery feel to it. Overall it was still a good experience, with decent food and very friendly service.
I really liked this place, the soup hit the spot and was rich with all of the meat goodie I was looking for. The negative, and the only negative was that I wish the noodles were alot softer. I do recommend this place, give it a try if you are in Calgary and looking for a pho.
Staff is super friendly and kind. Restaurant is very clean! Ordered peanut satay bbq pho and chicken salad rolls! Super tasty and big portions. Following all public Heath restrictions which is a relief as some places don’t. Right in Chinatown, so it’s easy to get to via transit or by car. Thank you for making our first meal out in 2022 wonderful! We will be back too! Happy new year!
This was delicious!!! The chicken broth was just what I needed, it’s just the bowl to warm you up and comfort you. The veggies, shrimp & chicken were super fresh, and the dumplings were amazing. I’m from Toronto but the next time I’m in Calgary I would come back here again for sure!
The pictures made it seem big inside but maybe that’s great camera work. If I recall, it used to be Pho Pasture but I guess it didn’t survive during Covid. It’s been renovated and called pho city and unless it has great food, it won’t survive either. I ordered the satay and the first thing I tasted was salt. Typically you would taste the herbs and spice but salt threw me back a little. It got a lil better as I go but really not a great impression. It’s unfortunate because I really want a pho place that can challenge pho Hoai which is scrungy, bad service but great food.
