About

Open year round, the Oshawa Museum offers events that engage, educate, and entertain visitors of all ages.

Story

The Oshawa Museum (OM) preserves and promotes awareness and appreciation of Oshawa’s history for the education, enrichment and enjoyment of a diverse audience. As the only community museum in Oshawa we take great pride in showcasing the history of our city from the earliest First Nation occupation to the end of WWII.

The OM is administered by the Oshawa Historical Society, a not for profit charitable institution, as an external agency of the City of Oshawa. We work in partnership with many community cultural organizations including Heritage Oshawa which is the Municipal Heritage Committee, comprised of Council appointed volunteers. Heritage Oshawa advises City Council on properties of cultural heritage value which are worthy of designation.

This place always has something to offer when I visit. Interesting conversations with knowledgeable staff, opportunity to dig through the archives, engaging public programs and of course the pleasure of walking through exhibitions in these beautiful historic buildings. It's always nice to see a great view of lake Ontario as a bonus!

It's a set of three small historical houses which were built on the Lakeside in the 1800's. The main house has a tiny gift shop, offices, and a few paintings and artifacts donated from some of the first families of Oshawa. Five bucks per person gets you a tour of the other two houses- one a schoolhouse (very neat! Kids got a kick out of it -"what's a Dunce cap?" 😂) and the other the "rich" home of an old prominent family. The museum is located right next to the beach and there's a playground with splash pad, the harbour, and paths to walk down if you want to spend the rest of the afternoon enjoying the outdoors. Parking is free, and lot is within a block of the museum. Not a bad way to pass an afternoon. Staff is very friendly and laid back.
