@Sherry. The owner spoke to me about this problem. And you are correct. No HST should be charged on gift cards. They are treated like cash. You only pay HST when you redeem for taxable services/items only. I have advised the owner not to charge HST on gift card going forward. Sorry for your experience. Tried to buy a gift certificate and they told me if I am paying cash no tax, if I pay debit they charge tax. I told them they should charge tax on gift certificate. I told her the reason why she is charging because she is covering the moneris fee. I told her there should be no tax charges on gift cards and I have never paid before. Owner said every place is difference. I pulled up the Ontario gift certificate laws and showed her you can’t be charged tax nor is there an expiration date on the certificate. She still insisted on me paying cash. This is the second in counter I had at this place and I would never recommend them to anyone.
