We absolutely loved the museum. We were a bit disappointed that the prison was closed to the public, I believe it was under restoration and maintenance work. But the museum itself is huge and was very interesting!nnWe were lucky to have Canoo membership so our tickets were free. However, i think regular tickets are about $25ish or less!nnParking is on the back of the museum! Had a little hard time finding it. But it's available there. Maybe for free maybe not! Depends on your luck : can't say when it is this or that... The parking doors both ways were open when I arrived and even a few hours later. But when I was about to leave, the doors were closed so I had to pay. So I am not sure if it's free at some times or... I don't known!nnThe art collections in the museum are interesting and give a great insight on Canadian and Indigenous art!nnWe were also very lucky to find a temporary exposition starring Rembrandt!nnI recommend.
While the Rembrandt exhibit was excellent, the highlight for me was to discover the wonderful impessionist works of Helen McNicoll. I absolutely loved her paintings. The contemporary and Inuit art exhibits were also quite good. There's also a small terrace at the top of the museum that has really nice views of the area that you shouldn't skip.
I went there during the Rembrandt and Helen McNicoll exhibition. The architecture of museum is great. The staff are very kind and helpful. There is an English tour guide at 13.00 which the guide Agath was very knowledgeable about the exhibition. She gave lots of information about the history of Canadian art. The exhibition itself was astoundingly well designed, having the magnificent pieces as the cover of the wall along with the painting. The second floor was contemporary art pieces created by more recent artists and Inuit artifacts. The pieces were so unique that could not be found in other museums. The second floor opens to a roof garden with another piece of art. Sadly the other parts of museums were closed for renovation.
Gorgeous new pavilion celebrating works by québécois artists. The guided tour was really enlightening and we got a lot more out of the experience than if we'd visited on our own.
A very nice visit, but be forewarned the organization is undergoing an important expansion to house the largest Riopelle collection in the world, which is a major investment in itself. The other gallery building with the new addition will open in 2026, but now the Pierre Lassonde Pavilion remains open. If your schedule permits and it is still on exhibition, do see the Generations: The Sobey Family collection there, worth the visit. :
