My mother had been visiting this doctor for years. She doesn't speak very good english or french but this doctor speaks Chinese and that's why she stuck with him. Now that I am of age, I accompanied her to see her doctor. She had mentionned that he charges for consultations and I was surprised of that fact. He is under the RAMQ and therefore, the governement pays his salary. Close to the end of the consultation, he hands a hand written receipt of 20$ to us and tells us to give that to the secretary to pay our dues. I asked him what this was for and he answered it was for the consultation, follow up call for appointments, phone conversations if she needed and possibly a prescription by phone. Now, I also work in a clinic and I know this practice is illegal. You cannot charge a patient for a "what if" service, only the services rendered. The fact that he threatens not to call back for a follow up appointment if it's not paid is ridiculous. We told him we wouldn't pay for this since we don't need it and he told us to talk it out with his secretary who will elaborate more on this. We went to see his secretary who asked us to pay the 20$. We then told her that we wouldn't be needing these extra services and if we did, we would pay them when we use them. She got hostile and she basically threatened us saying that if after exams and resultats, the doctor required a follow up, they wouldn't be calling us to schedule it. Most of his clientele is of foreign origine. Unfortunately for these folks, it's difficult for them to find a doctor who speaks their language and they settle for Dr Mok in fear of being left with nothing. Which is a mistake, he takes advantage of the fact that they have nowhere else to go to charge these fees at EVERY visit. My mother have been paying these "fees" every visit for the past years. She never needed these "what if" services and have they reimbured her or offered to roll over to the next appointment? No. They just charged her.. Every, single, visit. He also went AWOL for my mother's operation at the hospital. The hospital had to call in another doctor, 5 hours later, to do the 15+ operations he had scheduled that day because he didn't show up and couldn't be found. Doctors like him should be ashamed of taking advantage of people. If he's this kind of doctor, I'm sure he does other shady practices. Avoid him. I hope he goes into retirement soon because he needs to stop practicing medecine.
