Merchant of Tennis

About

Canada's Premier Tennis and Racquet Sports Retailer.

Story

Merchant of Tennis, celebrating over 20 years in business, is a company founded by tennis players and professionals to cater to tennis enthusiasts everywhere. Incorporated in 1992 with a background in pro shop retailing the idea was to bring personal professional tennis service to a larger market.

Our flagship store opened in April 1992 on Bayview Avenue in Toronto. The second location opened its doors in Oakville Ontario in 1998. In 2006 we eagerly launched www.merchantoftennis.com to cater to our online clientele from around North America.

From 2008 to 2014, Merchant of Tennis became the Official Retailer and Stringer of The Rogers Cup in Toronto. The Rogers Cup is the ATP and WTA premier one week tennis tournament bringing all of the top ranked players in the world to compete in Canada.

The Merchant of Tennis professional stringing team is lead by Rob Thomas, Master Racquet Technician. This dynamic team has provided unsurpassed stringing service for Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and the many tour pros who were entered in The Rogers Cup. We are proud to offer this excellent service to our client’s everyday through our two retail outlets.

Our company is committed to giving back to the tennis community. Grassroots tennis has always been a strong focus and we are very proud of the contribution and hard work we put in at that level. We are the preferred retailer of the Ontario Tennis Association and have sponsored Team Ontario for over 10 years. We proudly support the Toronto Tennis Junior League and we have an ongoing partnership with the Doug Philpott Inner City Children’s Tennis Fund which provides free tennis camps to over 5,000 kids each and every year.

BEST place to buy Pickleball paddles! Great selection + outstanding customer service + competitive, fair prices = win, win, win! > Bonus: their product demos are a game changer! I highly recommend this place as the only place to shop for Pickleball & tennis products. This summer we discovered Pickleball - we're now hooked on the game :-. We looked for paddles at all the 'big' stores, found they had very limited choice and no product knowledge. Then we discovered MOT, who not only had a great selection but also has a demo program. We tested a bunch of paddles until we landed on the best choice for us.
I’ve been going here for years since I was a kid. The customer service has always been great, very professional and friendly staff. Regardless of assistance or in store purchases, calling or online, the experience has always been great. The staff go above and beyond to meet customer needs. I had an issue with an online order, Canada Post failed to deliver to the right address. I contacted Merchant of Tennis regarding this issue and the manager Frank assisted me and I was able to get the item from Merchant of Tennis. I was very fortunate and appreciated having this issue resolved.
For just $10 plus tax, you can demo two rackets for a week! After demoing 4, I ended up going with the Wilson Burn. Before placing my order, I called in and spoke with a gentleman and he was very patient when helping me choose strings and explaining why he thought that’d be best for me. I wish there was another location closer to downtown. With that being said, the store is super accommodating. I ordered a racket and asked if it could be complete by the time I return my demo just to save me a trip. They are also flexible on demo return time if at time of purchase you let them know. Inside the store, the shoe selection is good and they seem to have lots of sizes in the back. I ended up ordering shoes online and picking them up in store. The clothing selection is also pretty good, given the size of the store. They carry men, women, and kids. I highly recommend coming here for all your tennis needs.
I bought a new Head gravity S 2021 racquet, on the expert opinion of Sam here at this store and it worked out well. It had been almost 40 yrs since my last tennis racquet purchase + Sam's help was excellent! Also at the last minute to delivery, I had a special request to get an overgrip installed prior. And Sue made sure this happened b4 delivery. This place is great, with very good service + expertise... Which seems to be rare these days, with our ever changing+faster paced world of purchasing... So, Bravo Merchant of tennis! You have some great workers to ensure this. My opinion anyways.
Purchased k swiss tennis shoes and Yonex 98 racket. Staffs were very helpful and friendly. Thanks.
Picked up an online order here. I drove one hour from my workplace to there during peak hours. It is definitely worth the time!!! I am so happy that I came to the store. Employees were super friendly and knowledgeable. Would love to go there again!!
I told myself that I will support small business rather than big franchise store BUT I don't think I will come back and buy from here again. I returned 2 items in store and the lady who helped me was nice but there's an older man there and he was plain rude. To the point that I think he's being racist because I'm the only Asian customer there at the store. Not coming back here anymore. What a shame.
Had a terrible experience at Merchant of Tennis. I have been a regular customer for over seven years, but as of late, their customer service really has gone down hill. Similar to other recent reviews of this place, the staff are just plain rude now. Not just indifferent, but snarky and constantly belittling customers. I actually think the more appropriate word would be snobby. Won’t be coming back here. I know of many other who also aren’t going back.
I have been a long-time customer of Merchant of Tennis but multiple recent events have cemented my decision to no longer shop there. Every single one of my negative interactions at Merchant has been with one specific staff member named DOUG. Every time, this older gentleman has been very short and impatient with my wife and I and even in interactions with other customers that I have observed first-hand. I originally attributed his rudeness as a one-time bad day he was having. But as I have unfortunately encountered him more times thereafter, I can, without a doubt, say that he is just a cranky, older man who is unwilling to take the time to help customers and answer their basic questions. Instead of patiently listening to and addressing a customer’s questions and concerns, he belittles the customer and abruptly responds in a way that makes the customer feel like they are incompetent. From now on, I will gladly spend the time travelling to RacquetGuys in Markham as I know I will always receive much better customer service than to return to Merchant and deal with Doug.
Purchased a new racquet frame today from Merchant of Tennis! Ordered online through their warehouse and they had the order ready for me at their Bayview location same-day! Extremely helpful customer service and their in-store staff were also great Liz to name a few. Thanks again and would highly recommend!
