Merchant of Tennis

About

Canada's Premier Tennis and Racquet Sports Retailer.

Story

Merchant of Tennis, celebrating over 20 years in business, is a company founded by tennis players and professionals to cater to tennis enthusiasts everywhere. Incorporated in 1992 with a background in pro shop retailing the idea was to bring personal professional tennis service to a larger market.

Our flagship store opened in April 1992 on Bayview Avenue in Toronto. The second location opened its doors in Oakville Ontario in 1998. In 2006 we eagerly launched www.merchantoftennis.com to cater to our online clientele from around North America.

From 2008 to 2014, Merchant of Tennis became the Official Retailer and Stringer of The Rogers Cup in Toronto. The Rogers Cup is the ATP and WTA premier one week tennis tournament bringing all of the top ranked players in the world to compete in Canada.

The Merchant of Tennis professional stringing team is lead by Rob Thomas, Master Racquet Technician. This dynamic team has provided unsurpassed stringing service for Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and the many tour pros who were entered in The Rogers Cup. We are proud to offer this excellent service to our client’s everyday through our two retail outlets.

Our company is committed to giving back to the tennis community. Grassroots tennis has always been a strong focus and we are very proud of the contribution and hard work we put in at that level. We are the preferred retailer of the Ontario Tennis Association and have sponsored Team Ontario for over 10 years. We proudly support the Toronto Tennis Junior League and we have an ongoing partnership with the Doug Philpott Inner City Children’s Tennis Fund which provides free tennis camps to over 5,000 kids each and every year.

The shop has a fantastic selection of rackets, and the staff are clearly knowledgeable—I appreciated the helpful advice once I got assistance. It’s a great place if you’re looking for quality gear and solid recommendations.nnHowever, during my visit on a busy weekend, the experience wasn’t as smooth as I had hoped. I arrived first, but Dylan, the staff member who was supposed to help me, ended up chatting with another client while I waited. It actually took another employee to remind him that I was next. That part felt a bit disappointing.nnI still think the store has a lot to offer, and I hope next time the service feels more attentive from the beginning.
My initial experience trying to exchange a pair of shoes that didn’t fit was not great, and I left a negative review out of disappointment. I’m happy to share that since then, a manager reached out to me directly and was incredibly kind, professional, and accommodating. He sincerely apologized and went above and beyond to make things right. I was able to return the original pair and get one that fits perfectly. What started as a disappointing situation turned into a really positive one thanks to their genuine care and excellent follow-up. I truly appreciate the effort they made to ensure I was happy in the end.
Overall a good experience.nnI purchased a Clash V2 pro from this location, and initially offered a smaller grip than what I am most comfortable with; while it took some back and forth, they agreed to change the racket for me, this young gentleman who I believe is a Spanish speaker? is super helpful.
I wanted a hybrid stringing with 4G and gut today. The guy at the stringing desk named Antonio T didn’t clarify that they didn’t have the prince gut string, nor did he double-check with me or suggest an alternative. Instead, he just charged me for Babolat VS without mentioning a word, which is way more expensive than synthetic gut. When I told him I would pay now, he seems surprised. Since I always pay upfront instead of at pick-up, I only found out the string was wrong after walking out of the store when checking on my receipt. When I returned to get my racket back and asked for a refund, there was no apology-he was showing bad attitude and ignorance.nnUpdate: when I check my credit card account today, I saw Antonio T charged me twice instead of doing a refund. What a joke. Is it a scam?nnDon’t waste your time lining up for the slow service and explaining to some ignorant and rude staff.
I went here to find new court shoes. Staff member Mateo was amazing in helping me find the exact shoes that fit and felt similar to the old model I was transitioning from. Definitely would recommend!
