A few blocks from Gastown! Food court style eating. Line up to purchase and choose your food, get served, pay, grab utensils and napkins, find a seat, eat then bring your tray to the trash.nnFast and simple! Great for lunch!nnMust try! Yummy tasting broth and noodles. Tempura and veggies that are deep fried are additional cost.
It’s a famous chain that I’ve also been to in Hawaii. I can’t say that it was the same experience but it was still very tasty, especially for the price.nnIt’s not like a typical restaurant where you get seated and the waiters take your order - it’s more like a cafeteria where you get a tray and select the food you want.nnI got the large chicken curry katsu udon and paired it with assorted fried items which came out to under $30 which is almost unheard of in Vancouver! The soup was not too thick and it was perfect for dipping tempuras. The noodles were not was firm but I personally prefer it that way. The deep fried egg was a bit of a letdown because the yolk was not very runny - but other than that, I think it’s a great place to visit if you are craving udon and tempura!
Been to the one in Hawaii numerous times over the years. Waited to try the Vancouver location because of the serious lineups this place drew when they first opened.nnGot their classics: #5 Nikutama udon with sweet flavored beef, onsen egg and bk sauce $11.99 reg and #6 Curry Nikutama udon with sweet flavored beef, onsen egg, savory curry sauce $13.99 reg. You can get larger bowls but their regular size udon are pretty filling. Plus, you need to leave room for the tempura.nnLike their other location, it's cafeteria-style where you order your udon and then pick your tempura and pay. Self-serve area for various sauces.nnWe picked the asparagus, onion, karaage, prawns, mushroom, and potato croquette.nnOverall, I thought it was pretty good here. But the udon didn't taste exactly the same. The texture is not as firm and silky as the one in Hawaii and udon seemed to feel more rounded compared to the distinctive square shape of sanuki style udon. Good value and filling. Really liked the onion tempura.
We went on a Monday around 7:45pm and waited about 20 minutes before sitting down.nnWas super excited for a location to finally open in Canada! It tastes similar to the one in Honolulu and in California. Everything was decently priced and portion size was the same. Love the open concept and how they had plenty of seating available.nnLove how chewy the udon was and how perfectly poached the egg was. The tempura was fried nicely and wasn’t oily tasting. We got the zucchini and pumpkin coquette tempura.nnOnly downside was they’re still pretty new so they didn’t have any takeout containers yet and the cashier didn’t know how to properly give cash change back.
I visited the Honolulu location 2-3 years ago, so I'm very happy to see a franchise opening in my city. Since then, it's also been rebranded from Marukame to Marugame. I remember their rice dons being good, and this time I tried there classic Kake udon and it was very good. The broth is rich and has an umami flavor. They also have the same buffet-style tempura station and self-serve condiments + utensils station. Overall a lot cleaner and bigger than the Honolulu location, but the food quality is similar.
