So, you go down the interestingly located cinder block shack and down to the basement where the restaurant is, and you’ll find a pretty standard westernized Chinese restaurant. If you want to have your fix of regular rice and simple dishes, here’s where to go, but keep your expectation low. Because you are not going to find extraordinary things. Staff is quite friendly though. Parking you might need to park on the street or the mall parking lot.
Friend asked to take me to Mark's and I was happy to finally go there yesterday. It's kind of hidden as the doorway to get in looks like an electrical unit. But the door is to the left of the sign, then you down some stairs and the entrance is immediately to your left. Place could seat around 40 to 50 people, all open concept with a small/limited bar and a buffet section. The buffet is only open for supper on Friday and Saturday. We were quickly seated as we arrived early, around 5pm. Decided on their egg roll and Combo A, which was Chicken Fried rice and Sweet & Sour Ribs. Egg roll arrive hot and fresh pretty quickly. It is more batter dough then crispy eggs roll that I personally am used to. Was tasty but nothing exceptional. We both ordered the same combo, it was quite a large portion for the price. I saw some egg in the fried rice but honestly, saw no chicken. The ribs were tasty too, small pieces that fell off the bone. Here is the issue….I had made a dent into my food, say about ⅓ when I picked up some food and found a long, black hair within my meal. This was not mine and I immediately lost my appetite on the spot. I pushed my plate away and when the server, who I believe is the owner walked past, I showed him my meal and he took it away and tossed it in the used plate container. He did not take it back to the kitchen to show the staff. My friend, who I was dining with also lost her appetite. She questioned what might be in her food too. She ate about 5 bites after my discovery and then asked for the rest to go. As she put her meal into a to go dish, she inspected everything. Should have asked her today if she ate the leftovers or just tossed it out. As we sat, one of the staff from the kitchen came out to the dining room. She had long, black hair and was not wearing a hair net. I’ve worked in the food industry for 7 years previously, and hair nets were a must in the kitchen. When it came time to pay, my meal was free whereas my friend’s was not. Not sure what the practice is for that, it varies from restaurant to restaurant. What I can say is that I will choose to take my business elsewhere. My meal was covered; however knowing that they are not as concerned about safe food practice, does not sit well with me. ***Was going to take a picture of the hair while in my food, but was honestly soo turned off from the sight, I could not look at it anymore. But my friend saw it too, and when I showed it to the server/owner I was discreet about it.***
Food is tasteless. We ordered four dishes, all of them are lack of salt. Veggies is pretty raw, so good for practice chewing. Meat is over cooked. The worst Chinese cuisine I have ever tasted. The only positive thing, portion is large.
The food is yummy and waiters are very friendly and sweet. Tina helped us with our order and accommodated our requests. Value for money.
We got to Yellowknife late Sunday. Limited food options outside of fast food. The delivery was fast, food was hot and delicious and they sent us plates and cutlery to the hotel even though I didn’t remember to ask for it. Lovely friendly service. Thank you, guys! Edit: yesterday was great, today was not. Today is Labour Day, leaving us with limited options, so we were rather happy to order again. The order was not correct restaurant confirmed a bacon cheeseburger on the phone, but did not deliver it. To their credit they did not bill the cheeseburger and unfortunately the food that did arrive was not good. Popcorn chicken was odd and actually included a piece of shrimp…one of us has an allergy! The chicken “strips” included 2 pieces of battered chicken & 3 completely different small nuggets. The service and product was far better yesterday.
As someone who grew up in Yellowknife, I went hre as ankid, went to school with one of the workers faily members back in the day, and how many years later, return, again to see someone who knew me when i was much younger, and now getting older, maes this place really hold a sentimental value to it unlike any other restaurant probably in the world to me, it just has that own entity to it, and so do the people that work here, thanks marks, much love.
I am so disappointed. This used to be such a good restaurant. They had the best Chinese food in Yellowknife...once upon a time. $31.00 for a Cantonese chow mein and the most ridiculously small won ton soup ever. The container was the size of a lg gravy at KFC and was $11.00. $18.00 for the Chow Mein which had a pasty bland taste?? I wish I knew how to post a pic and I could show you. Ha ha ha. I showed the spoon so you could get a sense of the size
Located in the basement of the Scotia Centre this nice sized Chinese restaurant offers lots to choose from in their Buffet. I really enjoyed how they were efficiently set up to ensure you can get in and out quickly during the work day lunch rush. Decently priced for being in Yellowknife. I found everything in the buffet was made hot and fresh. Highlights of the buffet were definitely the sautéed shrimp and the homemade pie for dessert. I definitely recommend coming here for any meal as the staff were friendly, prompt and courteous. This will now be my go to place whenever a craving for chinese food comes around.
The wonton soup came out cold and still frozen on the inside, the chow mein was mainly just cabbage which came out cold as well, and the fried rice was very hard and cold.
Food is delicious and quick. Often get take out from here.Food: 4/5
