Decent camping for a 26ft trailer, but good luck finding a spot. No online reservations so I called the phone number and no one answered. When we got to the campground, the host was tucked away in a corner and hard to find. Available spots were even harder to discern. Electric hookups are shared between sites so be sure to have an extension cord handy.
I camped here in the tent only area and it was secluded from much of the noise and bustle around the RVs. There were nearby trash receptacles and even one recycling receptacle too. There are two showers that can get very hot $2.00/4 minutes. If the park had a trail to hike it would be even better!
Very nice beach, almost no mosquitoes. Blueberries, juneberries, and aronia foraging by the beach in August when we were there. Three stars because the campground is crowded and noisy although it does quiet down by 10:30 it offers very little privacy and is more like camping in a yard than camping. Also the bathrooms and showers. Bathrooms are poorly maintained not cared for by the town of Russell so that’s a disconnect. Showers are $2 in quarters for 4 minutes after you pay for your site. They are gross, full of bugs and slime and hair and not something anyone should pay to experience. So even though the beach was nice I think everyone in our party felt this campground was a meh, and we will be unlikely to return.
Campground is nicely placed. The staff is super kind and helpful and very accommodating. The only reason for the 4 star rating instead of 5 star is the lack of free showers and very odd placement of potable water pumps. The showers are timed-pay showers located on the edge of the campground. They are separate from the restrooms which seem to be part of the National Lakeshore station and not the campground. There is a second set of toilets pit style for the campground, they are located in the complete opposite side of the camp, closest to the single tent sites.
Campsites were a little closer than I prefer, and women's bathroom had no hand sanitizer but got to see the Northern lights on Lake Superior.
I didn't go camping here but I launched my Boat here ... I was surprised that they only had 1 boat Ramp We waited about 30 mins to launch. I noticed when I parked my Trailer, That there was New Steel break water panels & New docks. Hopefully they are adding another Launch
Great boat launch for the Apostles. Launch and campground are administrated by the town of Russel, WI launch is 10$ once or 60$ for the season. No online reservations for the campground at little sand bay, you have to call. Also here is a visitor center for the Apostle islands National Lakeshore with information for the area and camping permits for the sites on the islands if you didn't reserve on recreation.gov Verizon cell service is almost non existent here. The service you do get is probably coming from Minnesota.
I arrived late at night Friday 10/15/21 and self registered $30 a night. The spots were close together but easy enough to back my 26 foot travel trailer into in pitch black darkness. Some of the sites have the electric both 30 and 15 amp farther away than others and my short mid 1970s cord didn’t reach but it was midnight and I was going to sleep anyways so it didn’t matter. The Ace Hardware store in Bayfield has 30-15 amp and 15-30 amp converters, 30amp extension cords and pretty much anything you’ll need if you find yourself in the same position I was. The local grocery store had great pork prices so we were able to grill on the fire pit which had a grill built in. All other guests were quiet. We got visited by a rambunctious puppy and I have no idea where it came from. The park is FULL of the biggest mushrooms I’ve ever seen! Bundles of firewood are $6, ice is $3. Both were stocked. The ranger showed up around noon Saturday and the few other campers that were there left quickly after guess they didn’t pay. The cell service is spotty at best but if you’re going camping to relax, bring a board game and have some fun! Sometimes the most relaxing thing is to disconnect from the grid and this is a great place to do it! I’ll definitely be back, maybe even within the week. :-
This is a small campground located next to Lake Superior. It's very quiet and off the beaten track as you have to drive north of Bayfield to get there. There is a National Parks Service office located at Little Sand Bay and a nice beach for swimming. Showers costs about $1.
If you enjoy camping in a parking lot, this is a great a great “camp ground,” though Walmart fun offers more amenities without the up-charge.
