Reviews
Hey there! I’m Foxy Appetite, your go-to travel and restaurant reviewer. Today, I’m diving underground to explore something a little different—the Montreal Metro! I’ll be reviewing various stations around the city, focusing on aesthetic appeal, convenience, comfort, and more.nnNext stop: Lionel-Groulx StationnVideo review coming soon on TikTok @foxy.appetite and Instagram @foxyappetite!nnnnLet’s Talk About Lionel-Groulx StationnnLocated in the heart of Little Burgundy and just steps from the historic Saint-Henri neighborhood, Lionel-Groulx isn’t just a transfer point—it’s a vital connection between Montreal’s west end and the rest of the city.nnnnAesthetic Appeal & AmbiancenPlayful floor tiles add a splash of color and personality to the station’s otherwise utilitarian concrete design, breaking the monotony with a touch of charm. Near the elevator, a striking wooden sculpture offers an unexpected moment of reflection.nnThe Tree of Life 1978nBy Joseph RifessernMedium: Sculpted woodnGift of the United NationsnnOriginally created for Expo 67, where it stood at the entrance of the United Nations pavilion, The Tree of Life found its new home in the métro a decade later. This symbolic piece depicts the people of the five continents growing from a single root—a powerful call for unity and mutual understanding.nnThe station itself is spacious, intuitive to navigate, and—bonus—you might just catch a live performance by local musicians, infusing your commute with rhythm, culture, and unexpected soul.nnnnAccessibility & ComfortnnBig win here: Lionel-Groulx is fully accessible, with elevators available on both levels—essential for a major transfer hub. The station’s wide platforms and clearly marked signage make navigating between the Green and Orange lines a breeze. That said, it can get very crowded during rush hours. Pro tip: head to the far ends of the platforms to find a little extra elbow room.nnnnProximity to Key SpotsnnStep outside and you’re within walking distance of the Atwater Market, the scenic Lachine Canal, and bustling Notre-Dame Street—home to indie cafés, craft breweries, and antique shops. For foodies, cyclists, and weekend explorers, this area is a gem. Bonus: there’s a BIXI bike station right outside for easy two-wheeled adventures.nnnnHistorical SignificancennOpened in 1978, Lionel-Groulx isn’t one of the original metro stations, but it’s become one of the system’s most important. It was specifically designed as a major transfer point, featuring a rare stacked platform design that allows quick, efficient line switches.nnnnLocation & ConnectivitynnThis is where Lionel-Groulx shines. As a junction between the Orange and Green lines, it’s one of the most connected stations in Montreal. Whether you’re heading downtown, toward Hochelaga, or up to Côte-Vertu, Lionel-Groulx has you covered. Several bus routes also pass through, making it a true transit hub.nnnnUnique FeaturesnnThe stacked platform layout—Green Line above, Orange Line below—is rare and designed for fast transfers. And don’t forget the music! This station often becomes an impromptu stage for local talent, making it one of the more culturally vibrant stops in the network.nnnnFinal ThoughtsnnLionel-Groulx might not win any beauty contests, but what it lacks in glam, it makes up for in function. It’s accessible, well-connected, and ideally located for anyone looking to explore one of Montreal’s trendiest neighborhoods. Whether you’re commuting or gearing up for a canal-side adventure, Lionel-Groulx delivers—and then some.
I stepped into the Underground Cafe at Lionel Groulx to buy a small columbian coffee and it was the worst coffee that I ever tasted it was just like water no flavor ...and furthermore I paid $2.75 which is expensive. The woman who works there is not friendly at all.I don’t recommend this place.
Take the 747 bus to the airport and they are not inside the station, an attendant to assist during office hours I presume, beware however when you exit the station, the bus is on the right near the church spire.nnStation consists of green line and orange metro lines.
Although its an important hub for transit user from west island to the downtown core, I feel that security is almost non existant in this métro and around. Most users experienced some harassment physical and verbal from homeless people. STM should deploy more security agents and resources in this metro station and surrounding area.
A really easy to use Metro station. The station has multiple routes going from it and it is an easy place to get to the centre of the city. There is an easy bus stop nearby to the airport for convenient access.
