Great and tasty place. Sushi options are great, definitely many options to try. Blue fin was amazing, will be back to try more. Meat was great as well, but better not to mix with fish, as it’s a different protein, you might feel it later. Lots of cocktail and sake options is good, but also a little pricy. But very important, the amount you spend on your dinner will be very very reasonable! Service was great, place is great as well. Half patio is an awesome choice for the restaurant. Will be back to try other food
First time dining in. Went on a Friday around 6:30pm. We made reservations ahead of time and were promptly seated as soon as we arrived. Parking wasn’t too bad. The restaurant was located right above Tokyo Street Market. The fresh cucumber, orange, lemon or lime slices to add to each of our water was a unique/personalized touch. We ordered a bunch of things to share. The presentation of the sashimi platter was a wow! Service was very friendly and prompt the whole time. The server forgot to enter one of our dishes so it was kindly made complimentary to us. Overall, we had a fantastic experience and would come again.
The food and service is outstanding at Honjin! We vacationed in Calgary for 4 days and had dinner here twice because it was that good. The bluefin o-toro was melt in your mouth and uni was very fresh. Our toddler enjoyed the wagyu and abalone. The oshi sushi had a fun blend of flavours. We really liked the Honjin Trinity. Oh and the wasabi was real horseradish and had a nice sweet undertone. All around a great experience worth every penny. Kid-friendliness: Casual atmosphere, children's chopsticks
I've been to all the Tokyo street chains and this one prob has the best quality when it comes to sushi and yakitori. The chicken skin was seasoned well and had the perfect crunch. The sashimi bowl was good but the nigiri didn't have the best cut. Their rolls were pretty tasty. We tried the bluefin and uni one. I love the decor and drinking vibes.
Service was nice and food came out quick. Overall most of the food wasn't bad, my favourites would be the honjin trinity, grilled salmon belly, and the sashimi was decent as well. The fried items were a hit or a miss, the squid was good but to tofu was just alright. Their yakitori isn't grilled over charcoal so it's missing that crucial char flavour. Also, the dollops of sauce on the beef tataki is too big so there's too much sauce in each bite.
Overall, the food and environment are good. The quality of Toro is very high, but the processing method needs to be improved because the fish tendons are still inedible and the beer is not cold enough.Food: 3/5
Quite authentic atmosphere like yakitoriya or izakaya in Japan. I found yakitori is the BEST in city; the chef starts to grill raw chicken/steaks/okra, etc. once you put an order which will take longer time than other restaurants, but I rather want the fresh juicy taste of them. Busy eating that I didn’t take yakitori photos. Honjin trinity was good combination of sashimi/wagyu on a roll. Shishamo would’ve been better to grill rather than deep fried with batter but still my family loved shishamo. Ramen is not recommended.
One of the best Japanese restaurants in the city. I love the food so much, especially the unagi and the Chef's special deluxe sashimi. The staff and service are great. We had a very wonderful experience. Will definitely come back again.Food: 5/5
We looked forward to giving Honjin a try. We ordered the: - 4 kind Oshisushi the bluefin tuna was very fresh; the truffle oil in the hamachi was subtle and I would have preferred a bit more - Somewhere over the rainbow the tuna was particularly fresh and the yuzu mayo was refreshing with each bite and stood out - Honjin trinity the Wagyu was very tender; the amaebi was lightly sweet, creamy and very enjoyable; the uni was the best part as it was sweet, smooth, creamy, and left a sweet aftertaste in your mouth - Age tofu it was a bit on the dry side and the garlic soy sauce could have had more of a garlic presence for me - Shishamo karaage the batter was thick relative to the willow leaf fish - Special salad this was disappointing as the special dressing was essentially a flavorless mayo so it was mostly eating mixed greens; there were 4 thin slices of mango and the daikon did not come through I found that they were heavy on the rice for the sushi pieces which sometimes took away from the flavor of the sushi. Overall, the flavors of the seafood they use are very good but the price point is on the high side and the dishes could be more refined.
100% Japanese food! Delicious and fresh!!! All dishes we ordered are awesome except Angus beef with green onion mushroom sauce, the beef is a bit hard to chew , hope they will improve this part! Overall is excellent, will go again and try the other dishes
