Dimsum, noodles, classic Hong Kong fast fry dishes, even frozen dimsum to take home. Lots and lots of Chinese/Hong Kong style dishes. Service was attentive. The only thing I didn't like was the Chinese radish cake was suppose to be fried on both sides. However, only one side was fried and the other side was soggy. Had to take home and fried it up some more. Due to covid, didn't bother to send it back to the kitchen
I hadn’t been here in awhile. We came here for a late afternoon lunch when it wasn’t so busy. They offer an extensive menu including combination sets. We selected the 3 dishes combo set all for $71.80 which included 3 bowls of rice, soup of the day rather tasty, sweet dessert, and choice of deep fried eggplant or tofu. If you’re not into combo dishes, they offer dim sum dishes, noodles, & fried rice. There were a few dining ‘rules’ to content with – most importantly is that no credit cards are excepted only cash, debit, WeChat Pay & AliPay; minimum $8 per person charge, corkage fee of $8 for each alcoholic beverage, etc. They’re located off Kingsway and Imperial with free parking in the lot or on the street. While we were dining we smelled cigarette smoke waffling from the back. We assumed it was a staff smoking in the back. A huge turn off and had to tell the server which wasn’t a concern. Prices have gone up due to Covid. Hours are 11:30 am to 11 pm. They take your temperature at the front door.
This place has become a staple in Burnaby dining experiences, even though they've only been around for a few years. It is definitely a unique experience of Hong Kong's vibrant street food style cuisine. Our dining experience in general was very good but the pace and efficiency of service of our food and the lukewarm temperatures of the soup, left more to be desired. Everything else was good and the size of the dishes were generous. A recommended spot indeed!
We enjoyed a dine out at Hong Kong No. 1 Chinese Restaurant yesterday after hiking in Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park. Parking is easy - a spacious parking lot just in front of the entrance. Food is tasty - it’s in authentic Hong Kong style in presentation and as deliciously flavoured as food in Hong Kong . Though a small eatery, it gives us a comfy feeling of being home !
Located in a strip mall on Kingsway, Hong Kong No 1 Chinese Restaurant wasn’t in our initial plans for dinner in early August. Instead, we had planned to go to a nearby restaurant but were turned away because they were all booked up. I recall visiting the former occupant of this particular location Wei Dao Cafe, I believe a few years ago and not much has been done to the interior decor. Although something that I did notice right away was their use of a whole menagerie of different chairs for their large tables. The menu here was quite confusing for us… they have a number of different combos but trying to figure out what to order took us a very long time. We eventually wound up ordering a 2 dish combo for $34.80 plus a $2 up-charge for one of the dishes in our combo. In addition to the 2 bowls of rice, the combo comes with a complimentary bowl of soup made up of bone-in pork and chicken feet as well as papaya and carrot which gives it a noticeably sweet flavour. I found the soup and pretty much all of there dishes here were a bit heavy-handed with the salt for my liking. The Soya Sauce Halibut Tofu Hot Pot had plenty of meaty halibut but I would have preferred a more tender black cod version. I actually preferred the Beef Brisket and Rice Roll Hot Pot more although it was a bit saltier. The beef brisket was nice and tender and the rice rolls were quite good. Both hot pot dishes were quite large in portion size. Overall, the food was okay but a bit too salty for my liking.
First time here, and haven't try lot of dishes. However, for sure it is one of the best Chinese Restaurant in Burnaby. Taste is great and food is fresh. Will come back for sure!
My husband and I went there a month ago. Since its name means "Taste of HK", I would want to pick up some memory. Unfortunately, it's a disappointed visit! Staff works way too slow. I'd been asked for FEW times separately to get menu, tea, one of our orders missing beef brisket and something else....lol...each time has to wave for awhile to GET their attention because their sight only goes one way haha...Regarding the taste of food, we ordered noodles with your choice of meat/veggie, sorry I won't say this is the taste of HK. The fish balls should be deep fried one for traditional HK style "wooden cart noodles". Overall, I can only give two stars and I'm not sure I would be back for their second chance.
When my friend and I wanted to eat something for dinner we were driving at Kingsway in Burnaby, my friend had the idea to visit the “Wei Dao Café”. Unfortunately, the place is a bit hidden that we missed the entrance to the parking lot. On the second attempt we were able to make it. The restaurant was pretty empty; assumingly since it was quite early for dinner around 5 pm. We ordered a combo of two items which comes with rice and soup. As main dishes we selected Ginger & Green Onion Beef Sizzling Pot and Crispy Deep Fried Pork Intestines. Additionally, we ordered a Bubble Waffle. The soup was not special, but ok. The Crispy Deep Fried Pork Intestines were quite greasy according to my Chinese friend, it is the typical condition of that dish. That’s why it was quite heavy and it would have been better to try that dish in an appetizer size. Anyways, the pickled veggies under it were quite tasty. The only issue I had with that item was that it was not served hot but warm. However, the Ginger& Green Onion Beef Sizzling Pot came really sizzling hot. It was delicious. My friend complained about the small amount of green onions. Nevertheless, he also liked the meal. The price is not low. However, I liked the calm environment and the relaxing music. 3.5 out of 5
The food was great, the atmosphere bright and airy and the service was attentive. I was told what we ate was typical food found in Hong Kong. But it is not typical of the Hong Kong "style" cafes I've been to here in Vancouver. For example - they serve beer in bowls; two, oyster pancakes are crisp and light; three, fresh clam soup - spicy kick; four, tower of crab and garlic - lots of crispy garlic; five, refreshing chilled dessert - a flavor burst! And more! Would never have gone to this place if I weren't taken by friends and because it is hidden away in a plaza off off Kingsway. I'll be back with more people to sample some new dishes!
The fried chicken wings were okay and the seasonal mixed veggies with fish was mediocre, but the fried rice was very disappointing. I had to constantly remove hard chunks of bones/dried seasoning after a few spoons of chewing supposedly bone-free rice. Dinesty Dumpling House still has the best fried rice.
