Halifax Veterinary Hospital

About

Your Other Family Doctor.

Story

In 1939, the Halifax Veterinary Hospital opened its doors and became the first established Animal Hospital Practice in the Halifax area. Dr. Ross Ainslie acquired the hospital in 1953, and has since been committed to offering excellence in animal health care, promoting responsible pet ownership and health-related educational opportunities for our clients. The Halifax Veterinary Hospital is one of three (see also the Fairview Animal Hospital and the Spryfield Animal Hospital) that are owned by the Halifax Veterinary Hospital Inc. Conveniently located within the city of Halifax, our health care team offers collectively over 95 years of experience with extensive and ongoing training in all aspects of Veterinary medicine.

The Halifax Veterinary Hospital is an accredited member of the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA). Since 1996, we have regularly undergone evaluations by AAHA to ensure that we comply with the association’s high quality standards of care. These standards cover nearly every aspect of our hospital, including surgery, pharmacy, laboratory, exam facilities, patient care, cleanliness, client service, emergency services, diagnostic imaging, and anesthesiology. The AAHA accreditation process is rigorous and exact and only about 7 percent of Animal Hospitals in North America receive this highly valued accreditation.

The professional and courteous health care team at the Halifax Veterinary Hospital provide the best possible medical, surgical and dental care for our highly-regarded patients. While we are experts in our field dedicated to giving our best every day, we are also pet owners who understand your desire to give your pets the best care. We treat all of our patients as if they were our own pets. Please take a moment to contact us today, to learn more about how our veterinary practice can serve the needs of you and your cherished pet. We look forward to being Your Other Family Doctor.

The team here is truly fantastic. Even something seemingly as simple as a vet visit can become a challenge with a reactive dog like mine. However, the team here never fails to welcome my dog with open arms, smiles and rubs and make (sometimes odd) concessions to get her in and out as painlessly as possible. They are truly professional and show great care in every interaction. The vets anewer every question, provide thorough explanations and always provide excellent care - I've never felt rushed out of there.

This is a wonderful clinic. I brought my cat here shortly after moving to Halifax and was daunted about finding a new vet for him as my previous vet was excellent. From the moment I walked in the door I felt very welcome. The vet took her time examining my cat, asked alot of questions and answered all the ones I had too. I particularly loved that the vet gave me a call checking in on how my cat was doing a few days after he was in. It was a nice feeling and that extra touch really made me feel that they genuinely cared for his well-being. I won't be going anywhere else for my pets veterinary needs!

This place is amazing. I took my lovely kitty there to be checked out and the staff was great to calm him down and ensure that he felt safe while there. The vets provided me with lots of helpful information and were very compassionate and understanding throughout the whole appointment, I just got another cat and I will most certainly be bringing him here. Anyone looking for a great vet office you can trust I highly recommend this place.

I love this Vet, and when I say Vet, I mean every employee at this place. Everyone is so sweet and kind and understanding (my dog hates going to the Vet) and it makes me feel bad that he throws a fit to even have his temperature taken. They let me take it, which I thought was really nice. He still hated it, but he let me do it. I understand dealing with animals is their specialty, but it still feels like genuine interactions with you. I went in to get updated shots for travel and while they still upsold me on other things (blood work and extra shots) they were all things he should have. The assistant who suggested getting the blood work sold it as, it checks for kidney issues, which are very serious in older dogs. He also told me about how he is dealing with a dog at home that is currently going through kidney disease. Which made the interaction more personal and not -pushy sales-y you don't love your dog if you don't do this - kinda interaction. I love my dog, he's my baby, my seven year old child so you can bet I'm easily talked into anything that benefits him. The point is everyone here is lovely, the place is bright and clean, the vet I had was very sweet, they take very good care of my dog every time we have to go and I recommend taking your pet here

I moved to Halifax and this was one of two vets that was recommended - I have 2 cats. I had an emergency situation with my one cat and the vet saw me promptly - was nice, efficient and patched my kitty up, no problem. I had no complaints. I went in a few months later with my second cat who had a stinky mouth. She has had bacterial infections before and I assumed a simple round of antibiotics were in order. After a pleasant discussion with the vet tech, the vet came in, took a quick look at my cats mouth, told me it was aggressive cancer, my cat had 1-2 months tops to live and there was no treatment except pain management. She was very curt and insensitive and did not bother to tell me anything about the cancer, management, etc. She walked out, left me (bawling) in the room and I never saw or heard from her again. I was shellshocked by the news and I went and sought a second opinion elsewhere. The second vet took time to speak with me, told me about competing diagnoses, and administered a steroid treatment that could help shrink whatever was in my cat's mouth. That vet followed-up with me very regularly to monitor my cat's progress. Long story short, it's 9 months later, my cat is still alive and whatever mass was under her tongue has disappeared, no thanks to the Halifax Vet Hospital (Note: I opted against a biopsy because my cat is very senior so I can't say if it was cancer that is in remission or if it was a harmless tumor ). Bottom line: I found the Halifax Veterinary Hospital to be extremely insensitive, dismissive, and unwilling to properly treat my cat. I wouldn't recommend this vet.
