Story

The Gun Barrel Steak & Game House, which is locally owned and operated, opened in 1993 in what had formerly been the Wyoming Wildlife Museum & Taxidermy. The Gun Barrel Steak & Game House name was taken from the small east Texas town of Gun Barrel City. The original 1950’s hand-painted town sign was given to us by the town.

Many of the museums full mount game trophies, which were taken from around Jackson Hole, can still be seen - some even in front of their original painted dioramas. In addition to these indigenous animals, there are numerous others from around the world, many of which were collected by us. Most of the antique cowboy artifacts also come from Wyoming and many have historical significance; Hank William’s 1800’s buffalo coat that he wore on the Lone Wolf album; two Harrison Crandle colorized photographs taken in Grand Teton National Park in the forties; and eight original Edward Curtis portrait photogravures of American Indians taken circa 1890. Our largest gun is an .82 caliber rampart gun from India forged in the 1700’s.

The original museum structure was completely refurbished with lodgepole pine. The logs were hand-peeled in our parking lot using draw knives to remove the bark (notice the cut marks) and the milling was the subject of a Carhartt catalog shoot. The detail logs around the front entrance and bar were removed from Shadow Mt. north of town. We also set the old bugling royal elk which was outside the old museum, atop the building and now it is a Jackson landmark. The mural on our west wall outside is a re-creation of Bierstadt’s Buffalo Hunt.

Almost all of the fixtures in The Gun Barrel Steak & Game House were designed for the steakhouse, including ironwork, lighting fixtures, tables, and mesquite grill. The Gun Barrel has recently been the site of a Browning catalog shoot and an NRA video on game preparation.

The Gun Barrel also has a second location in beautiful St. George, Utah. Visit www.gunbarrelutah.com for additional information.

I don't understand the negative reviews. If you're looking for wild game or beef/steak in Wyoming, this is the place for you! This was my second time back to the Gun Barrel for dinner and loved it. Service was fast and very friendly. My fiance and I both ordered wild game. I had the buffalo prime rib and my fiance ordered the elk chops. Both meat dishes were outstanding and prices were very reasonable. The sweet potato side was delicious, the sugar snap peas were fresh and sweet, and the garlic mash was perfect. Make sure to order rare or medium rare if you're looking to order game meats. For dessert, we shared a creme brulee and it was the best I've ever had! Once you're done with dinner, it's nice to walk around the place since it looks like an old west museum. We will absolutely be back again.

Well, hard to know who to believe in these reviews. My experience was simple. I was here in late October, so was seated and attended to very efficiently. I had the elk, medium rare. DELICIOUS. Great upscale lodge feel, lots of taxidermy throughout, greeted by a large Bison at the door. My server was pleasant and she couldn't stop smiling and being sweet. Couldn't ask for more. Ya want an amazing steak, go to Ruth's Chris - it's their specialty. Wake up, you're in the mountains of Wyoming. Eat game, have fun...done.

I understand that this is supposed to be a staple of Jackson Hole and that everybody wants to go here to try the different types of meat. But honestly the best thing about this entire experience was their ranch dressing and I think that just says it all. The service was really slow, the food was really overpriced, and it wasn't really that tasty. We are pretty disappointed because we had been in Jackson for a while and went to a lot of other restaurants and save this one for lost and this was a huge disappointment. I would recommend going to figs or the noodle kitchen or pretty much anywhere else besides this it is totally not worth it.

Do not even listen to the negative reviews, this was the best food in Jackson. The ambiance is what restaurants should be in this area. We had fantastic service by our waiter Bob, he was knowledgeable about the menu and didn't rush us even though there was a wait list. Defiantly make reservations. The bartender Ashley was awesome and recommended a great wine to pair with our steaks. Would highly recommend!

We had an amazing experience at the Gun Barrel steakhouse. Made reservations and were seated within 10 minutes of our time. Mark F was our waiter and he was extremely attentive. Our drinks and appetizers came out very quickly. We ordered the prime rib and buffalo sirloin, both cooked to perfection. The ambience is exactly what you would expect in Jackson Hole and everyone was extremely friendly!
