The place offers variety of BBQ meat options. I tried ribs and Chicken. Ribs were bit dry. Chicken leg quarters were tasty and juicy. However, chicken breast was missing that tenderness. The sides, coleslaw, mac and cheese and Gorgonzola pasta were tasty.
Nice selection of barbecued meats. We tried a variety of their options in a three meat, three side combo. I especially liked the brisket and smoked chicken. Some of the items have a strong southern flavoring while others seem to lack a bit of flavoring. The atmosphere was very nice and the staff was very friendly. The prices are what I would consider to be a bit expensive but reasonable for a cuisine unique to this area.
Disappointing. We were excited to see such a highly rated BBQ joint so close to the highway for a good lunch on our trip. But what followed was...well, disappointing. Having lived for many years in Texas I know what real BBQ is. This was not it. The prices were standard for BBQ, high. But the portion was tiny! The serving tray was about 7x10inches with open space between items. Maybe half of what you'd expect for that price! The food was the most bland food I've eaten in a long time. Even the BBQ sauce was dull and lifeless. They charge you more for the lunch menu after 4pm. Weird. The young waitress couldn't have possibly cared less about our experience. At checkout she asked how everything was, I said "It was ok, but the serving sizes were pretty small" She replied with shrug. Lastly the restaurant had a generally run down atmosphere. No music, boxes stacked up in the corners, etc. There's gotta be better places to eat in Idaho Falls.
5 Stars, Well hello flavor..... WOW, excellent bbq, where to even start, the ribs were as perfect as you could ever get them. Good bite, clean bone but yet tender, and the smoke flavor for days was so tasty, it was so good no sauce is needed, just eat then nacked. The brisket was so juicy, flavorful, delicious, perfectly moist, and tender, wow, wow, wow.... And the smoked quarter chicken was in my opinion the best I think I have ever had ever.... I know my memory is fading with age but this was fanominal. The sides were excellent as well, collard greens, baked beans, mac and cheese, all great. I only wished one thing was different, that I had more room to try it all, had to take home some pecan pie, omg this was freaking delicious, I beat they could cook anything and it would be a Heavenly tasty dish. Was in town for an event and dined here last weekend with family. Absolutely everything was outstanding! Ms. Loretta is such a sweetheart! Definitely recommend this family run business. Tremendous food from the meat to the deserts and excellent service. If you haven't tried it yet, you're missing out on amazing food with a heaping helping of Southern hospitality. Spent the whole meal laughing at the conversations Ms. Loretta had with our 6-year-old grandson. Hands-down great folk here. We will be back soon!
Amazing place. Very friendly staff, the mac and cheese is out of this world! Chicken was delicious and the corn muffin was perfect! Recommend if you’re wanting some great bbq. Also free piece of pie if it’s your first time here!
Great great southern food! You can't go wrong! At GrandPa's Southern BBQ, it's not just about the food but the homely and warm atmosphere you feel as you dine in. If you haven't tried it, you should! Great food! Great customer service!
This place serves the most flavorful smoked foods imaginable. I discovered it from an article, "Top black owned restaurants west of the Mississippi. " It ranked #2, and to my surprise it was located in Idaho! My wife and I drove 5 hours to eat here. Be fore warned, the location is attached to a motel, the food is not arranged on a plate to post on Instagram. The brisket was amazing! The ribs were so tasty. I absolutely loved the red beans and rice! The collards weren't heavily vinegary, that was a nice change from what I'm used to eating. You don't go here for the ambiance, you don't go here for service with a flair, you go here to have some of the best soul food.
I really like BBQ. I smoke my own meat and have been to a lot of different BBQ joints here and out of state. I'm always looking for good meat smokiness : I hate to say, but this place just wasn't very good. The brisket was dry and tough to chew. Same with the ribs. Neither of them had a good flavor. I had to drench the meat in BBQ sauce to be able to eat it. The pulled pork was drowning in some sort of sauce that wasn't very good either. The corn bread was good, the mashed potatoes were good, the Mac n Cheese was ok, and the cold noodles with peas were good. The portions were pretty small as well, especially with the sides. Overall, I was sad, I wanted the place to be amazing but it was not :
The food at Grandpa's is phenomenal! I got their chicken and ribs with mac and cheese and greens. The mac is very buttery. The greens are great with the vinegar sauce. The chicken was very moist and had a nice complex smokey flavor. The ribs aren't as smokey as the chicken, but still very moist. The service was fast and friendly. If you want good barbecue this the best place I've been in Idaho!
