Nice little European market. Wonderful deli selection, and great bakery. Frozen pierogies in bulk, along with some other bulk sweets. Excellent tea selection. Produce varies in quality and price, but that’s pretty standard for smaller markets. Definitely worth checking out.
I love these kind of stores and this one is a big one. I never knew it was there, I thought that was a Gateway Produce this whole time. Great selection of items especially if you have a sweet tooth. The bulk candy is probably the largest selection I've seen in a European market. The store is huge, it's the size Gateway Produce was so it's a good size. Bakery is okay, Anoush has better baked goods. Wonderful meat selection and great cheese choices. I love the selection of canned fish and the prepackaged baked goods such as cookies and crackers, so much to choose from. Lots of produce too. It's a great shop. As for them not being friendly, they are European and I find a lot European people to be more introverted than others, they aren't unfriendly they just give you your space which I love. If you expect to be followed around the store and constantly asked if you need help this isn't the place for you. Then again how often do you find that in stores anyhow these days? I actually find them to be more friendly than workers in American grocery stores. Most grocery stores I go to the employees act as if they wish they weren't even there and that they hate everyone around them. I don't get those vibes ever from any European shop I've gone to. They're just quieter people, respect that.
I love this place. Head straight back to the deli and be prepared to order by pointing and using hand signals to indicate how much you want. But these folks know how to cook. Everything is fresh and delicious. The soups are amazing--if they have their cold soup, it's amazing. The people in the deli are delightful and happy to teach you a word or two of Ukranian.
Is there any officials inspecting this place for the quality and safety of the foods? Some of the vegetables and fruits are so spoiled that the department of Agriculture wont approve to feed animals with. The price of the most dry items are almost 30% to 40% higher than it sold in other Russian stores in town.
The employees here act like you are a burden as soon as you walk in. I'll take my business down to Barbur in Portland to avoid the horrible attitudes and nonfriendly staff here. The store was empty and they were watching movies on their laptop and we wreally bothered them by walking into shop more than $200 worth of groceries. They DO NOT know how to SMILE or show any expression and then they talk badly about you in Ukrainian. Then they get mad when you understand what they say. Horrible service. I will definitely never return here again. This wasn't my first bad experience with them but set us off the top this time with their nasty looks, expression and attitudes. Owner really needs to watch what's happening in their store. The extremely rude red headed girl working tonight is the one I am talking about in case you see her just don't even go in. Good luck with your horrible attitudes. I hope you find something in life you enjoy.
Rude workers. Their faces show they don't want you here! There are other European markets, where service is so much better. Do not recommend this place.
The best store in the area! I always can find everything I need there. All produce is fresh. And service is great.
This place is great. Excellent produce. Some stuff is far less then Winco, some things are a bit more but all good quality. The European market is awesome. Get those items you can’t find anywhere else or just want to try! Just browse around amazing what you can find. The meats, cheese and cured fish Deli are my favorite though. so many great things there. Attaching some pics of those areas. Worth the trip!
Ah, the place is a bit of an adventure. I kind of miss the old days when it was Gateway Produce and was packed with fresh fruits and veggies, but alas, that boat has sailed. The produce section, is a bit ragged and that’s no longer the attraction. The mask wearing is hit or miss. Today it was 100%, which was a big change from last time I was there. Some of the customers can look pretty imposing and I can see staff being a little cautious about demanding mask compliance. That big dude with the crew cut and the scar looks like he ate his mother for breakfast. So let’s get to the good. Nice bakery! Real crusty loaves of solid rustic homemade bread at a reasonable price. A little taste of the old country, regardless of where your home country might be. Pelmeni! Cute little frozen Russian raviolis stuffed with a variety of fillings, from chicken and beef to potatoes, looking for all the world like bins of miniature planets. I never had an idea that such things even existed! And then, there is an endless selection of sausages, meats, piroski, teas the Russians do fruit teas better than anyone, cakes, and a host of stuff I don’t even have a clue about. But most important are the sugary little meringue type things that melt in your mouth like memories of young love. A crunch, a wash of sweetness, and then it’s gone… holy mother of God these things are amazing. It’s true the staff can be nice some days and other times they look at like you are like you just crawled up out of the sewer. And it’s also true that some of the customers give you the, why are you trespassing here stink eye, but it’s also true that sometimes if you want to experience something new, interesting, and exciting you just need to suck it up and go anyway. I would guess if you show up enough, they stop looking at you like the ugly American tourist and loosen up a little. It’s not like America is always hugely open and welcoming to the Russians, or any other immigrant minority for that matter.
Horrendous customer service, I will never spend a penny in this dump. Why is this place even open? Does the health department even inspect this horrible place. I will be reporting them, this is not acceptable. They have the best expired food selection. If you want to have yourself or your children end up in the hospital with food poisoning, go ahead and knock yourself out!
