To start things off, the restaurant owners are very friendly and kind. The interior of the restaurant is smaller than others, but is very clean. The food itself isn’t bad, but it isn’t the best either. The only problem I had was the serving sizes. I normally have a small appetite, but I was able to finish the meal in one go which says something. If the owners would reconsider making the portion sizes larger, I will consider coming back as a customer.
I heard good things about this place on a local facebook food group and I thought I would give it a try. I got the dinner for 3 and a couple of side orders. The Cantonese chow mein noodles I ordered were half crunchy and half not... I have added a picture of them with my review my kids love these kind of noodles anywhere else but when they saw these they did not wanna touch them at all. The chicken balls and egg rolls did not come with any sauce which makes them quite bland. Also its weird that on their menu it says "sweet and sour chicken balls" but no sweet and sour sauce with it? The chicken soo gai did not come with any gravy and it's best with gravy. They said on the phone delivery would be between 1 hour - an hour and a half it actually arrived quicker then that. ALSO they say on their website that delivery is "free" over 30$ and I spent well over that and on the recipt I saw a delivery charge of $1.50...Im not going to argue over $1.50, but that right there is false advertising. The pops they gave us were pepsi and we dont care about pepsi. I was not asked about what kinda pop I wanted over the phone. I was excited to try a new place, but I won't be back. I gave an extra star because some of the other food I have ordered here that I recieved was quite tasty, warm, and they packaged it well and quick delivery.
We were getting tired of the constant disappointment from the Chinese restaurants we normally order from so we tried Gar Won for the first time. Everything was very tasty except the chicken chow mein...it looked wonderful and fresh, just no flavor. Beef & Broccoli pretty tasty, spicy shrimp delicious, spring rolls so good, chicken soo guy awesome. I will definitely order from here again.
Hands down the best Americanized Chinese food you’ll get your hands on in the city. Great pricing when compared to the other titan Chinese places in Windsor. They are also one of the few Chinese restaurants I can order from and not have any stomache issues whatsoever. The Cantonese Lo Mein is FIRE!!! Only thing I’d fix is trimming some of the batter for the fried foods like Soo Guy and Chicken Balls. Bit too much breading. The family combos are well priced for what you get though. Love it. The main staff include the owners themselves and they treat everyone like gold. I have been coming here since they first opened up well over 4 years ago now. They treat us the same as the first day we walked in; like family. Through COVID and all other circumstances. Love coming here.
It's very expensive. The Wonton soup was very good, but no meat in the wontons, just noodles. The General Tso Chicken was good. Chicken balls good. Fried rice good. The emperor's beef was disgusting and not like anything I've ever had. It was beef and onions in a weird and not tasty orange sauce. . For the $90 we spent, I feel like they were cheap on the beef in mixed vegetables and why no meat in the wontons???? I feel like we should have paid $50 for what we got. If they weren't cheap on meat, and the Emperor's Beef wasn't gross, they would have gotten 5 stars. DON'T BE CHEAP!
I don't know if they were just having a bad day or what ... but to begin with, the delivery driver couldn't find the house. He had gone to the wrong street. Also, after giving me the food, he had to leave and come back because he had misplaced his credit card machine. When he arrived back, his CC machine looked as though someone had run over it. It was totally smashed up. He said he must have left it on the car roof. It was a mess ... but it somehow worked. When I finally got to open my food, I quickly discovered that the "crispy" beef was anything but crispy. In fact, it was both soggy and doughy. It was basically inedible. The flavour was good, but I have never seen "doughy" and undercooked crispy beef before. I make it at home sometimes mysef ... and since the beef is just dredged in cornflour, I have no idea how they managed to make it so doughy ... almost as doughy as sweet and sour chicken. That is NOT how crispy beef is made. It was just awful! Both the singapore noodles and the shrimp fried rice were bland and flavourless. I had asked the lady who took my order if they would not make it too hot ... but not adding too many hot peppers should not affect the FLAVOUR of the dish! The eggrolls were acceptable, though I am not used to having thick chunks of nearly raw cabbage in my egg rolls, but I like cabbage, so I ate them. Oh ... and the restaurant-made plum sauce they supplied in a tiny container leaked out all over the bottom of the bag. I only received one tiny little container for four egg rolls. Thankfully, the food was delivered in a paper bag inside a plastic bag, so the clean up wasn't too terrible. But it meant there was no plum sauce for the egg rolls. : Would I order from them again? No. I was very disappointed. I'll have left over singapore noodles and shrimp fried rice which I can fix tomorrow by adding some spring onions, and a few other flavour enhancers, but the crispy beef went straight into the garbage, as it can't be fixed. One bite was enough to put me completely off it. A mouthful of uncooked dough tends to do that. This wasn't a case of you get what you pay for either. Gar Won is not an inexpensive restaurant. The search for decent Chinese food in Windsor continues. Sigh. :
My new favorite place in the City to get Chinese food from. Great food, great price and more than generous portions. The Mushroom Fried Rice is a must try!
Enjoyed some Amazing Curry Beef the veggies cut in perfect bite sized pieces and the beef was soft and melted in my mouth, the white rice was fluffy and once I mixed it in it looked like this, the curry sauce that the whole dish was in tasted the way it should not over Curried and salty like some places. I can't wait to try the rest of their menu! Mmmm mmmm!
Great restaurant! Large servings, very friendly staff. They have a discount for pick up and free delivery over $25. Great wonton soup!! We'll be going back very soon. See my pictures for some of the menu items. Located where Ladds restaurant used to be on Tecumseh road just before Jefferson. Hit like if the review was helpfull please!
Everything from the food to the customer service was excellent! We have now ordered twice from here and have NOT been disappointed. The won ton soup is by far my favorite item on the menu. The chicken balls are full of chicken and cooked to perfection. Thank you for being the best Chinese food in Windsor :
