Came to Elgin Mills Cemetery for a funeral service for one of my grandpas ? - I don't know who he was in relation to the family tree as everyone referred to him in the Chinese name variant.nnThe inside of the building is very nice, pretty. There's a lot of seating available I assume waiting areas. The decode is a complementary addition, very pleasing to look at.nnThey have a coffee lounge where you can get coffee and tea. They also have milk, cream and sugar that you could add to your hot beveragennInside the actual rooms where you have the funeral ceremony and maybe get to see the one who passed away open casket... The room is somewhat dimly lit, not too bright and shiny, but also not too dark. There's this piano in the back. On the big TV screen or multiple TVs joined into one huge screen, we saw the photos that my extended family has chosen to show at the memorial ceremony. It's a basic slideshow. My dad said there was background music, but it was very light and hard to hear. So basically, non existent.nnSo, the whole family is Chinese, extended family and all. The funeral older man worker don't know what his title was, finally started the memorial service ceremony about 20 minutes late. And he only spoke in Chinese. There was no English translation. So, I and other English speakers understood nothing.nnAt least when my uncle spoke, he had an English translation of his Chinese speech. So that was good.nnThe funeral workers no clue what to call them or what their job titles are, most of them were kind and helpful. They showed me where the washroom was and where the coffee and tea station was.nnWhen the funeral got to the stage where we all left to go to the plot and put the one who passed away into his new and very permanent home... Things kind of got disorganized. This lady funeral worker was the one who was carrying a black crate of pink and red roses they looked pretty dead and wilted to be honest. The whole family hadn't all reached the location of where the grave was, so the funeral lady worker only gave half of us the roses and left the rest of us without the roses. So, my mom went off to find the funeral lady worker and told her that the rest of the family didn't receive any flowers. Eventually, the whole family got the flowers and we could go on with the funeral service.nnThere was some slight confusion with the family members being the pallbearers. Like where they should be, position wise. But it was cleared up pretty quickly for both inside the building and in the actual cemetery.nnThe same funeral older guy worker mistook my dad as the son of the one who passed away and spoke pure Chinese to him. My dad let him know that he was the wrong person and that he only spoke English. I suppose all Chinese people look the same, even amongst Chinese people.nnThen we all watched these men who used a truck that had something akin to a hydraulic lift type system lift the casket/coffin and slowly made its way into the prepared grave.nnOverall, I guess it's an okay funeral service. The actual service from the funeral workers could have been better less disorganized, English translation, etc. The truck with the hydraulic lift thing was pretty cool. The coffee was sour. The washroom was clean.
DO NOT BUY A PLOT HERE. This cemetery is a sad excuse for one. The way they treat the legacies of the deceased is beyond me. They threw my late grandmother’s photo on the ground outside behind the office along with everyone else’s as if it were garbage.nnSo unbelievably disrespectful in the way they handle everything. They also have rules that make no sense & are horrible at managing the cleanliness of the cemetery. I would give zero stars if I could.nnEDIT: I added a video for proof so that you can really see how they “care” for their deceased.
I would like to thank the staff at Elgin Mills for their support during the recent passing of my beloved grandfather.nnA special thank you as well to Funeral Directors Emily, Ingrid, and Katie for their professionalism and for accommodating my family’s requests on such short notice.nnTheir guidance throughout this difficult process was a tremendous help as we grieve.nnWith our deepest appreciation and gratitude,nThe Moulayi Family
I had the unfortunate task to organize my mother’s funeral that was completely unexpected. My dad had already purchased the plot but the rest was left to me. I was lucky enough to get Emma. She was an absolute gem of a human. Organized, polite, care, empathic and charismatic. She made everything run smoothly and seamlessly. Thank you for all you did for me and my family.
I just want to say thank you to Cindy Tong at Elgin Mills Cemetery. She was incredibly kinds and helpful during a really hard time for our family. Thanks to her, everything went smoothly when we laid our loved one to rest. She took care of every detail and made sure we didn't have to worry about anything. Me and my family are so grateful for her support. Thank you again.
