Absolute hidden gem here. Can’t believe it took me a year to find it. I’d say a must visit when in Vancouver. 18 seats means an incredibly intimate experience so you’d better love who you’re spending it with. The staff were absolutely phenomenal. Level of service and knowledge of food and wine was impeccable. Food was so unique but the chef is a wizard. Pairings I’d never dream of went incredible together. Great wine list. Wish there was maybe 3 local beers to choose from but I’m getting pretty picky. Apparently change most of the menu every 6 weeks. We’ll be back soon for sure. Go here!
First of all, amazing food. Tiny space, only a bar and exceedingly small tables. Its a chef style menu, you get what is on today's menu. Great vegetarian options. The food was really enjoyable/ service? the one thing they can improve on. We had to wait 15+ minutes before anyone really was taking our order, or explain how things work. There is only on cook and that made the overall service very slow. There is also no "real" bar with good cocktails, but great wine selection. The space is stylish, the bar chairs not super comfortable. If you are looking for a space off the beaten track, that offers a different kind of experience. Look no further.
This tiny gem of a restaurant is a real find for those who care about thoughtful cooking. This restaurant exists to highlight humble and otherwise overlooked local produce. Most of the seating is at the bar where you can watch the chef put his head down and work. His food is creative, unadorned, unique. Plating is basic, food is perfectly seasoned. The omakase is great and made even better by the incredibly thoughtfully paired wines. This meal was like a great, independent movie: it has something to say and makes you think long after the final scene. Great spot. Nice work.
Absolutely spectacular meal. The tasting menu was incredible with the wine pairings. Beautiful service and a really lovely atmosphere. I will go back again and again!
Do you like flavor? Don't miss this hole in the wall, industry insider new favorite. Hyper-local, mind-blowingly flavorful, good old fashioned cooking of familiar dishes -- yet so unique you've never had anything quite like them. Like wine? Awesome list with no filler garbage, nothing you're gonna see on your local BCL shelves. Like having fun? It's casual, it's hospital, it's just going to be one of the best meals you can have in this town.
A wonderful omakase experience from start to finish at Elephant. Only 18 seats available in the space at any given time. I went with the omakase wine pairing as well which if you have the means, desire, and opportunity to do so, I would definitely recommend. The wines are very well sourced and paired fantastically. From start to finish, the omakase - consisting of 5 principal courses plus some extras, was a delight. The menu explored a variety of sweet, funky, spicy, smoky, and umami flavours. Sitting at the counter was a lovely treat as I got to see the chef at work as well as explore the space and interact with the stellar staff. Elephant is an experience that you will wish you had discovered sooner and is absolutely worth the cost.
Food: 3/5 The starters were fresh, the one with peanuts on top was stunning - I was pleasantly surprised with the complexity and flavor. The endive was okay and this was the first time I’ve ever had beef tartar as an entré which really compromised the experience, not mentioning it’s lack of flavor and the beef were kind tard. The liver curry rice was okay. The dessert was special, salted caramel flan with olive oil. Service: 4.8/5 friendly and knowledgeable Ambience: 4.5/5 very cozy, a bit cramped * I support local chefs and restaurants, but the reviews on this place seems slightly inflated. It’s kinda backfiring as I wouldn’t be disappointed if the rating isn’t so high…
Cute restaurant and cool ambiance. Overall service was good, but SUPER SLOW, we waited for 45 minutes in between dishes. Kudos to the young chef for trying, I’m all about supporting locals, but the food tonight was very unimpressive. The best dishes were the first three veggie appetizers. The rest were very mediocre that I didn’t bother take pics. This beef tartar had a very good presentation but it tasted pretty tough and flavourless. The main dish “curry chicken liver rice” was terrible as the rice was cold and came in clumps, no offence to the chef, but it tasted like the $7 curry dish I get from food court. :/ Overall I don’t think it’s worth the $68 price tag. Unfortunately, I won’t come back
Elephant has stolen our hearts. We currently live in LA but whenever we're in Vancouver, we always make it a point to visit to them. Small and intimate restaurant delivering BIG flavors. Justin is truly a talented chef and served up some incredibly tasty dishes during the 2 times we've dined here. They are known for their unique omakase experience that can be paired with natural/biodynamic wines. On our last visit, we decided to try their burger late night/off-menu and pasta and both were phenomenal. We've also tried their omakase on our first visit and we highly recommend it if you are looking to try a variety of Justin's creative dishes. Shoutout to Justin and Kelsey for always making us feel at home delivering downright good food and wine. If you're looking for a restaurant off the beaten track, please do yourself a favor and hit up Elephant. You will not be disappointed. Also, try to get a seat at the bar if you can. It lends to a memorable visit. We will most definitely be back again.
Great service and cute restaurant. However, the omakase was unimpressed. Nothing really stands out except the dessert. It is a bit hard to justify 60 per person with these mediocre dishes. I probably wouldn’t come back again.
