Eggy's Diner Chicago
"Don’t be fooled by the name, Eggy’s is more than just breakfast though it does have an extensive egg-centric menu. Modeled after the homey diners of the ‘60s, the menu is full of items designed to give a home-cooked feel. Think pancakes, grilled cheese sandwiches and burgers. But it has made national news for its crunchy French toast, which was featured on Travel Channel’s “Food Paradise” as a can’t-miss carby dish."

We saw good reviews about this place, so we walked to try it. A big line and around 30-40 min of waiting Sunday at 9:30 am, we asked the hostess If we can sit at the bar, she said the place at the corner was tiny but we can look it up and check if we wanna stay, that was so nice of her to give us the opportunity to sat there, we were fine, our server was kind and gave us options. Food tasted original, not processed. Fresh banana shake, fluffy pancakes even the syrup tasted good. Prices were not expensive and good quantity for value.
Came here for brunch on a weekday. The inside ambience was nice and bright. Loved the vibes. Since we came on a weekday it wasn't too busy, if anything, the service was just a little bit slow. We ordered the New York French Toast, Eggy's Combo, and Gyro Omelet. I Food was overall pretty good. The servings were huge! I got the french toast and I really enjoyed the blueberry compote. The banana cream inside the french toast was pretty good too, just a bit too much cream towards the center of the french toast. We also ordered orange juice and some coffee, which was overall decent! My friend didn't really like the orange juice.
Prior to visiting Chicago, I checked online reviews and decided this would be our breakfast spot and is only about a 10 minute walk from the Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverfront hotel. It took us over 30 minutes to walk there our first time as Google Maps gave us the wrong directions due to the 3 levels in Chicago in this area. It did not disappoint. I recommend getting there early as it gets busy, with wait times, but it was also the marathon weekend. We arrived slightly ahead of the marathon weekend and during the weekday, it was still 3/4 full by 8:10am. It is obviously a well loved restaurant off the beaten path in the downtown area lower level. Service is very kind and the food is amazing. If we ever return to Chicago, this will definitely be our daily breakfast spot.
Worth the wait for a seat on Eggy’s Diner. BIG delicious breakfast. We ordered omelettes and they come with side potatoes + one toast or one big pancake. The coffee is terrible, but the staff is friendly and quick. Not the best breakfast I’ve ever had in Chicago but pretty good and big portions!
My family enjoyed our breakfast. Wait staff was very attentive. My daughter's French Toast had a staple in it. Eek! We were not charged for her entree. Overall, this was a great experience. Vegetarian options: Many items to choose from. Kid-friendliness: My kids had a swell time.
This was probably the best breakfast we've had in Chicago. I got the Nutella crunchy french toast. It was so incredibly delicious. The bananas were warm and caramelized. The strawberries were cold and refreshing in contrast and the entire thing was stuffed with warm gooey peanut butter and drizzled in Nutella. I could only eat half of it. We got the churros which were filled with strawberries and maybe cheesecake/cream cheese. They were yummy and it was a generous portion. My husband got the breakfast poutine and it was so unique and delicious. The cheese curds were fried and the gravy was perfect. We had about a 20 minute wait on a Saturday morning. Apparently you can put your name on the list through Yelp, which we didn't do and it was still reasonable. They text you so we went and sat by the dog park across the street and watched the dogs while we waited. We will definitely return here on our next visit to Chicago.
Some friends in town for Lolla wanted to meet for brunch, and I recommended this place. Amazingly large portions, efficient staff, there was no sense we were being rushed even though it was crowded. Everything we ordered was flavorful and all the dishes of the diners around us made us want to order more. Will definitely be back!
Loved this place! Came back home to Chicago for the first time in almost 6 years, and this place is definitely something to brag about!!! There was a bit of a wait, but after eating there, I see why!! Food was absolutely DELICIOUS!! My mom and I thought it was a family owned joint, with how well everything was cooked! Service was excellent, even sitting at the bar. Going back to the food, talk about huge portions!! I could barely finish my meal, my mom wasn't able to, but that's a good thing! You definitely get your money's worth at Eggy's. I recommend this place over an ihop or other chain any day!
The fried chicken and biscuits was amazing. It had a sausage gravy on it and that was basic, but the chicken and biscuits are delicious. My wife had the crepes and she said ihops is better, but they were good. Ohh the potatoes are fantastic, my thoughts are baked then smashed and fried. Yum
Depending on the day, walking into Eggy’s dinner you might face from no wait to a 45 minute wait average for Chicago brunch places specially on weekends. Although it is busy, you get pretty okay customer service - I recommend to sip some black coffee while you wait for your order. [chilaquiles ??? ] It felt more like a plate of nacho chips not a brunch meal. The tortilla was too crispy, the salsa felt more like a dressing rather than being mixed with the tortillas, and the other ingredients e.g., chopped onions were used as toppings …. I tried to mixed it on my own but it was hard due to that lack of seasoning and it was more dry … At least personally, I felt I just paid for overpriced nachos … not a meal : [short stack plain pancake] It was good - it gave me back my feeling breakfast
